After gaining a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering and an MBA in Information Technology, an artist realises his passion lies elsewhere and moves into the creative realm of photography. It sounds like a career fairy tale but for Ilan Wittenberg this is a reality. Now a distinguished portrait photographer Wittenberg spends most of his time creating portraits and fine art. Ilan’s journey as a photographer began relatively recently in 2011 but he was quickly recognized as one to watch, winning a plethora of national and international awards. He is now thrilled to be working in an eye-opening field that enables him to get amongst New Zealand’s culture. The people, the atmosphere and the landscape here have contributed to Wittenberg’s shift into a photographic career, where he enjoys exercising his creative spirit. In 2014 Wittenberg was given the wonderful opportunity of presenting three themes of photography on Auckland’s scenic waterfront. Titled Black, White & Colour, it was his first endeavor to share his creations with the public in a solo exhibition, featuring portraiture, landscape and fine art. He says it was an invigorating experience to delve into, exploring his competence in creating abstract pieces. Wittenberg aimed to break through the clutter of the thousands of images we see daily by telling a story through his work, emphasizing the potential which photography has to touch peoples’ lives. During 2015, Wittenberg had the opportunity to pursue one of his true passions: documenting people in the Old City of Jerusalem. His exciting journey took him through twisted and narrow streets where merchants are proud to market their goods. Ilan’s unique eye and his ability to create quick rapport with his subjects enabled him to produce a compelling portfolio of monochrome photographs, capturing their character and the special atmosphere using ambient light only. Faces of Jerusalem was chosen to be exhibited at Te Uru Waitakere Contemporary Gallery in early 2016 and was featured in f11 Magazine as well as in Art New Zealand magazine. Ilan won the Travel Photographer of the Year award from TRAVCOM for photos from this collection. Ilan went on to become a Finalist of both the Documentary category and the Portrait Classic category in the 2015 Iris Awards and became a Fellow of the Photographic Society of New Zealand. Commencing in 2014, Bare Truth is a captivating collection of portraits of New Zealand men who are humble, courageous, and vulnerable. Their edgy portraits are presented in monochrome to emphasize their shape and form, using a simple background so the viewer can focus on their body language and facial expressions. The Bare Truth portfolio was exhibited at the 2016 Head On photo festival in Sydney as well as the Signature Programme of the 2016 Auckland Festival of Photography. In 2016 Iris Awards Wittenberg won The Highest Scoring Print award for a set of nine portraits from this collection. It was featured in multiple news media including STUFF, Our Auckland, TV3 Story, The Wireless and Sunday Star Times. In May 2019, a ten-page interview was published in PhotoWorld. Ilan won the Portrait category and the Grand Prize at the 2018 Sony Alpha awards. His winning photo was featured on the cover of D-Photo magazine together with a feature story: Faces of Morocco. In 2019, Wittenberg visited Tanzania. Exhibiting at UXBRIDGE Arts, From here to Africa was also published in D-Photo magazine. It was a Feature exhibition at the 2020 hEAD oN photo festival in Sydney. Proud to have recently captured fresh visuals for three dynamic factories in Takanini's industrial hub — Fairfax Industries, Freighter NZ, and Transcold NZ.
The brief was clear and exciting: deliver updated exterior shots that showcase the modern scale of each site, energetic staff-in-action images on the busy factory floors, and authentic office/team portraits that highlight the real people behind the precision engineering.
From dramatic wide-angle exteriors catching the Auckland light on loading bays and branded facades, to gritty, high-energy floor shots — sparks flying from welders, teams coordinating massive trailer builds, technicians installing refrigeration units and tail lifts with pinpoint focus — the photos pulse with the skill, sweat, and teamwork that drive these operations.
The office portraits add that human touch: confident faces in collaborative spaces, reflecting dedication and expertise.
Commercial photography like this is all about storytelling — turning industrial spaces and processes into compelling visuals that build brand pride and connection.
Grateful for the opportunity to document this level of craftsmanship. If you're looking to refresh your company's imagery with authentic, high-impact photos (exteriors, team action, corporate portraits), let's chat! see more at https://wowphotography.co.nz/action-manufacturing/

My name is Sarah Bell, and I was born on October 29, 1942. My journey begins on a picturesque farm in Argentina. As a little girl, I was enchanted by the wonders of nature—the vibrant colors around me, flowers swirling in the breeze, birds singing cheerful melodies, playful cats prowling, tiny mice scurrying, and ducks gliding gracefully across serene waters. The sky was my canvas, stretching endlessly and brimming with infinite possibilities. Even before I turned four, I vividly remember how alive the world felt, especially during the haunting time when a swarm of locusts descended upon the fields, leaving behind barren crops. Despite these challenges, my heart always remained rooted in that magical place.

But life took unexpected turns, leading me to Buenos Aires, where I moved in with family. At the tender age of nine, I faced an unimaginable loss—the passing of my beloved mother. This seismic shift plunged me into a darkness of grief that lingered like a shadow. Yet, amid the heartache, destiny intervened when I met Gedalia at sixteen. He became my anchor, the love of my life, my unwavering supporter. With every word of encouragement, he infused me with strength, whispering, "You can do it," allowing hope to bloom where despair had taken root.

In a beautiful twist of fate, my life transformed. The joy of motherhood wrapped around me like a warm embrace, far surpassing the lessons I learned in university as a social worker and a nanny in kindergarten. Motherhood was breathtaking—it reshaped me into a person I never thought I could become. I owe a deep gratitude to God for the wonderful opportunity to rewrite my life story through love and family. As my children grew, each milestone they achieved filled me with immense pride and joy, reaffirming my belief in the beauty of life’s journey.

Yet, fate dealt another cruel hand when I lost my beloved Gedalia. In the wake of that heart-wrenching moment, I found a renewed purpose. I resolved to move forward, to grow, and to embody strength for our children and grandchildren. I immersed myself in music, learning to play the electric keyboard, and rediscovered the joy of drawing. For me, drawing is a spiritual outpouring, an expression that transcends mere technique. Each blank canvas invites excitement; it’s a journey into the unknown, a dance with colors that reflect my deepest emotions.

With every stroke, I strive to convey a powerful message: life is beautiful, filled with goodness and grace, just waiting to be uncovered. My love for nature—flowers, birds, and my fellow human beings—blooms with each passing day. I find it easy to connect with others; I believe people can sense the compassion I hold for them, the love that fuels my spirit. In this vast tapestry of life, I am forever searching for beauty, reminding both myself and the world that it is always within reach. Each day, I wake with a renewed sense of purpose and a determination to make the most of the time I have been given. The love of my family, the beauty of nature, and the joy of creativity continue to inspire me and fill my days with happiness.
