Artist Profile: Sir Haare Williams (Te Aitanga - a - MÄhaki, Rongowhakaata, Tuhoe).
Sir Haare Williams has built a beautiful legacy in the powerful forms of teaching, writing, painting, honouring and breathing kindness. He grew up in Åhiwa, in the ÅpÅtiki District and was raised by his Grandparents. He was immersed in the Te Reo MÄori language, only learning English when he started school at age eight. His grandmother Wairemana was a leading force for Williams to pursue education, telling him heād one day become a teacher. He went to ÅpÅtiki College secondary school and then graduated from Ardmore Teachers College in 1955.
Williams first ventured into his role as a teacher, teaching in Tauranga, TaupÅ and MÄtauri Bay. He then started his next chapter as the inaugural general manager of the first MÄori Radio station, āTe Reo o Aotearoaā for Radio New Zealand. Williams is often described as the āpioneer of MÄori broadcastingā, as he later became the general manager for Aotearoa Radio.
Williams over his lifetime has worked with South Seas film and Television School, Unitec, Auckland City Council, iwi claimant communities and in 2019 became a published author with his book āWords of a KaumÄtuaā. In 2022, he was knighted for his services to MÄori, literature and education.
Williams is currently still active with his writing, teaching, work with MÄori communities alongside working as a painter. Currently living in Manurewa he works from his garage often waking up at 4am with a burst of inspiration. His paintings incorporate MÄori epistemology, indigenous knowledge and storytelling in the form of multi-layered abstract landscapes. Williams has been the KaumÄtua for Papakura Art Gallery for many years and has given his time and care, showing us what it means to foster strong relationships with artists and the community.
Sir Haare WIlliam's spectacular exhibition Wai - Water concludes on Saturday, October 19. Don't miss it!
