HE KAKANO - TAHI by ✨

▪️ Te Ao Māori, the Māori worldview, is grounded in the belief that people are deeply connected to te taiao (the natural world). This connection shapes how we see ourselves and our place within te taiao, inspiring us to cherish and protect our environment. Introductions in Te Ao Ma-ori begin with whakapapa (genealogy), linking us to specific areas, land, bodies of water and other aspects of ancestry beyond geography, to symbolise relationships between people, the environment, and the wider universe. Whakapapa ties, guide us to honour our tipuna, care for the natural world, and build a sustainable future for our tamariki and mokopuna. This is kaitiakitanga - guardianship and protection - a concept far greater than simply caring for the environment. It’s a call to weave the wisdom of the past with the needs of future generations.

▪️ Nōku te whiwhi ki te mahi hei kaitiaki. It is my privilege to serve as a guardian.

▪️ This image is a part of my ongoing kaupapa exploring whakapapa and the merging of our worlds - a journey of restoring cultural knowledge and creating traditions with my tamariki. They symbolise the concept of kaitiakitanga visually - as a tangible reality brought to life through deliberate actions and conscious choices.

The KAHA [Strength] exhibition features 23 photographs along the Southern Apron of Queens Wharf, including this powerful image by Emma Baker - Photographer.

"Energy, courage and intensity is what stood out for me when creating work to the theme ‘Kaha’.

The idea for my image - Tane-Mahuta came while documenting the significance water and environmental restrictions have on our day to day life. We live and work in the Waitakere Ranges, a bush clad area close to 3 large bodies of water, but too far to be connected to the city’s water supply. As we approach warmer months and now with lockdown challenges, water collection and preservation becomes a focus.

It was made at the end of a long day of lockdown, lying under a ladder with a makeshift camping shower teetering above and the kids dancing excitedly around me. It symbolises busyness, imperfection, and the bursts of fun and energy we’ve needed, to get through the last year and particularly our latest lockdown, where parents like myself juggle the intense emotions, ups and downs that come with work, school, and family life."

This is the last weekend of the KAHA [Strength] exhibition, so if you're keen to check it out, best hop to it!

KAHA [Strength] was curated by Womens Work NZ and made possible by Eke Panuku Development Auckland with help from Tom Ang Photographer and Interesting Things Aotearoa

Who’d have thought that one day I’d sit there thinking about the nostalgia that comes with the smell of a newspaper. Those newspaper feels eh.

Now I’m doing my shift at the exhibition We’ve got a fab line up of artist talks today.

I’m there till 1pm and would love to see some familiar faces - so would my girl who’ll be with me and let me photograph her for my series ‘Aroha Mai, Aroha Atu’ - a series of body positive portraits.

And I’d just like to say a huge thank you to who’s been a constant source of inspiration and support.
