From fallen Pōhutukawa to something completely new.

John sees the possibilities in the roots, curves and imperfections of fallen timber, shaping them into something entirely new while still letting the character of the wood speak for itself.

I wanted to photograph the pieces in an environment, allowing the light to move across the wood and reveal the textures, shapes and details within it. Framing each piece within the surrounding space gives a sense of scale and shows how these sculptures can sit naturally within a space.

This is the part of photographing people and their work that I really enjoy. You get to discover the story behind what they create, and then find a way to photograph it so others can see what you saw.
