If you hear a squeaky kind of “cheet cheet” on a walk, chances are a New Zealand Fantail | Pīwakawaka (amongst other names) isn’t far behind. Those little guys are not shy and they will get quite close. Although you may start to feel like a Disney princess, it’s not you they’re after; their aerobatics are a way of snapping up the insects you disturb as you go.

This never resting bird is quite hard to catch! One of its names, tītakataka, is used to describe someone who just can’t stay still: he hou tītakataka.

Originally from Australia, the Royal Spoonbill | Kōtuku ngutupapa didn’t start breeding in Aotearoa until 1949, which gave it a “self-introduced native” status. For once, they thankfully don’t compete with other native birds and they tend to head for coastal rivers and northern harbours and estuaries.

Their long bill, like a long black spoon, are handy for detecting and scooping up fish, invertebrates, crustaceans, and even frogs.

Talk about a lunchtime surprise! While on Ulva Island, this curious NZ Sea Lion | Pakeke emerged from the bush to join us during our lunch break. It took him a bit of time to acclimate to our presence before he decided to take a refreshing bath.

Remember, if you ever find yourself on the same beach as a sea lion, don’t forget to keep your distance to ensure your safety and avoid disturbing these wonderful animals. They are stronger than you and males can weigh up to 450 kg.

Dotterels | Tūturiwhatu are cute little coastal birds, sometimes hard to spot as they merge quite well with the colour of the sand.

This guy here was on his lunch break, looking for his favourite: crabs.

We love spending the day on beautiful to see the incredibly adorable Takahē! They are not shy, roaming around the island freely and can even come up close if you’re lucky.

With only 500 individuals now, every sighting is a reminder of the resilience and dedication involved in saving these precious blue gems.

While on Rotoroa Island, we spotted a male Paradise Shelduck contrasting against a lake full of vibrant algae.

Unlike most ducks, female Paradise Shelducks are more colourful than males, sporting a white head and chestnut body.

The Saddleback | Tīeke gets his English name from the chestnut saddle-looking patch on its back. Its call is quite distinctive, and you will hear them long before you see them. It can almost sound like they are laughing at passersby…

Most were wiped out by introduced predators in the 1900s, and saved by translocations between offshore islands. They now thrive in pest-free mainland sanctuaries or islands where the habitat is stable.
