Four-time premiership-winning five-eighth Jarome Luai has officially signed with the PNG Chiefs 🔥🏉

The NSW State of Origin representative and Samoan international is the club's first signing for the inaugural season. He's contracted for seasons 2028 and 2029 and has an option to remain at the club in 2030.

"On the field, Jarome gives the club a marquee half around whom we can build a competitive roster. His signing will attract other quality players given his standing in the game," the PNG Chiefs said in a statement.

"Off the field, the significance is even greater. Rugby league is everything to the people of PNG, and to have him choose to become the face of the club will resonate far beyond the sport. It will inspire a generation.

"Jarome is a proud Pacific Islander, and his cultural values — community, family, humility, and pride in where you come from — are exactly the values this club will be built on.

"The PNG Chiefs will stand for something bigger than a single country. We are also the team of the Pacific. Jarome embodies that identity, and his presence in our jersey will resonate across every Pacific community."

Of all the details that came out about Jarome Luai's trip to PNG, the most illuminating was about the hole in the ground, writes ABC Sport's Nick Campton.

When the Chiefs brass gave Luai the tour of what will be the future site of their luxury compound, all they could show him was a hole in the ground.

He had to take their promises on faith, but by accepting what shapes up as the richest per-season contract in rugby league history, he has made that promise real.

The hole in the ground may as well have been overflowing with bubbling crude or filled with money, because now begins the greatest gold rush rugby league players have known since the Super League war. He is the first, but others are sure to follow.
