I'm running a pinhole workshop as part of FotoFest Hawkes Bay in Napier.

We'll be making our own cameras, exposing paper negatives and developing the results in a pop up darkroom at Creative Arts Napier (CAN) 16 Byron St, Napier

It's happening Sunday 4th Oct from 10am - 3pm.

$150 pp.

Working on some new pinholes. Following on from the bush series in Cross Track I wanted to use objects found on walks as my pinhole apertures. This is an empty paper wasp nest placed over a 120 pinhole camera.
I love the alien primitive vision that develops.

The pinhole camera barely holds together. The wasp nest is so fragile, each time the photo paper neg is removed, bits break down. An exercise in thinking about all the variables, accepting the result and not expecting to tweak to improve. One off wonder.

I'm really looking forward to being part of later this year in October.
I'll be exhibiting my pinhole photography alongside other photographers at Napier CAN Gallery from 28 Sept to 22 Oct as well as holding a pinhole workshop at the gallery workshop space.

We'll create a pinhole camera from recycled materials, make exposures with photographic paper and process the results in the pop-up darkroom. There will also be pinhole cameras from my collection available to use and experience how pinhole sees differently. A very hands-on day and a lot of fun!

Sunday Oct 4 from 10am - 3pm.
$150 per person includes all materials.
at Napier CAN Gallery - 16 Byron St, Napier

The workshop is limited to 8 participants. (Aimed at adults)

Last Saturday's workshop was a great success. After the fog lifted, it was a gorgeous day and everyone's cameras worked fabulously.
I love how the imprecise nature of pinhole can celebrate the expressive abstract as well as moody realism and everything in between.
At the end of the day we made a 20sec group shot in front of Highwic with an isosceles pinhole camera.
Thanks so much to the Highwic team for hosting and to be part of again.

I have an exhibition 'Cross Track' coming up with . later this month at Studio One Toi Tū in Cell Block Studios.
Running from May 21 - June 6.
Open weekdays 11-3, Saturdays 11-4, closed Sundays

Faye Norman and Jenny Tomlin’s works explore overlooked and untracked routes – natural spaces and found objects that exist alongside suburbia. Tomlin intuitively uses pinhole to interpret the space as felt rather than seen, producing images that are interpretive rather than strictly realist. The variability and serendipity of pinhole encourage moving offtrack and exploring the deeper bush over extended periods of time. Norman gathers materials through chance encounters, and these are brought into the Cell Block Studio. Scanning and subtle visual manipulations transform these objects into dislocated traces. Though altered, the images retain connections to their original contexts, creating a delicate tension between origin and presentation. In the exhibition, external locations and materials converge, where traces of past use and environmental conditions remain visible, producing a quiet sense of the uncanny.

Moving along a creek up an untracked bush gully with my phone looking for pinhole possibilities, the birds were all around, chatting to me. As always, missing the moment with this tui but just getting a glimpse of it's wing as it disappeared.
