Do you ever wonder how many times you've driven past things that would be worth checking out? Puhoi Valley - where the cheese comes from! Many times it's flashed by on the way up north, finally this time we stopped and had a look. The cheese factory/shop itself was closed, but the historic village had some sights to see.

Arriving into the village you are greeted by an older Catholic Church - this one opened in 1881, more than 100 years before I was born.

As you round the next corner there is a general store and a small library. After that there is the Puhoi Pub & Hotel, with the stables across the road. The stables building has quite an interesting store, run by a lady who imports Americana during her frequent travels to the US. I bought the obligatory magnet for the fridge, but we also got some earrings and a poster for the wall. Stop by a have and have a look, the owner is good for a chat.

The pink glow. I wasn’t sure it would be worth going out to see the Aurora last November. Late sunset, have to find a place with some interest and also not too much light pollution. I ended up at the gannet colony, and after some wait I think the results were worth it. It’s not such a common sight around Auckland!

Have you tried Kodak Pro Image 100 film before? What did you think? I bought some recently, and this weekend I put a roll through my Nikon FE. I'm not sure that I like it that much. While it's fine, it is grainer than I expected, with some of the grain resembling digital colour noise. I think I prefer the Portra 400 for 35mm at the moment, unfortunately with a more hefty price tag!

Here are three scenes from that roll of film, captured on the Ten Korowai-o-Te-Tonga Peninsula, just north of Parakai. I'll be honest, I didn't know what the peninsula was actually called - it's always been the South Head for the Kaipara Harbour. Now I know.

1. A gravel road makes its way up the hills into the distance, flanked by some power lines. Meanwhile, sheep mind their own business and worry about the things that matter in life - touching grass.

2. A home, maybe once someone's castle? I'm not sure if this home is lived in anymore, though the parked car suggests that maybe it is. Surrounding the building is grass farm fields, a source of income?

3. Junk yard. An old boat or barge sits on dry land, with some smaller boats and cars dotted around. It appears this section may back onto a mangrove covered creek on the edge of the Kaipara Harbour.

All images taken from the road side.

Ōhinerau / Mount Hobson. This was only the second time I’ve been up this volcano, despite driving past it hundreds of times on the motorway. The previous time was for New Years fireworks!

This was a beautiful day across the city, a brisk southerly wind kept the temperature cool though.

Bannockburn Sluicings, near Cromwell, New Zealand. I didn’t know this area existed until a recent trip down south! I’d say go check it out if you’re in the area.
