At low tide just after sunrise a few months ago, I flew the cliffs at Arkles Bay, Whangaparāoa. My original plan was to try to locate the old “secret path” down to the beach, and i think I did.
I’ve recently learnt they are planning to build a subdivision on top of the Pā.
This land was once Rarowhara Pā, a significant Māori settlement. Today there’s no visible acknowledgement of that history and they want to truly erase it by building luxury houses in top of the cliffs. Cliffs that have been surveyed by geotechs, and have predicted to partially collapse.
As someone who chose to make Aotearoa home, this is something that I deeply care about. I created a geospatial 3D model of the cliffs so the story is at least recorded, shared, and awareness is made.
Development is part of growth.
But history should be part of the conversation too and preserved.
This is just a low res video, i have the high quality 3D model as well.
