Ulyong Studio

Ulyong Studio A photographer based in Auckland specializing on portraits, wedding and events. Hey! I'm Julius. I can still make some mean lattes!

This has been my original photography page back when I was starting to be a photographer. This was made back when I was still in hospitality and banging out those flat whites and latte arts. A couple of years after making this page, I started a full-time job as a photographer and it sharpened my skills in this industry. It's been more than ten years and I can say that I have come a long way. I am

now a proud owner of a photography company but I wanted to keep this page as my personal photo vault. I wanted to show you guys how I evolved as a photographer and where I'm currently at. Hence I'm keeping some of my very old photos from the beginning...and yes, some of them I cringed but I want to show you my progress as an artist, from how I edited my photos back then up to now, on how I have gone through so many logos, up to the watermark days because I really believe back then that I was the sh*t! LOL. 😅
Although, stealing someone else's photo and taking credit for them is STILL not okay! If your intention was pure, then the least thing you can do is acknowledge the photographer. (Wow, that escalated quickly!)

Anyways, if you have any inquiry, just hit me up and we can have a talk. Just a little side note:
I named this Ulyong Studio in celebration of my childhood. My dad used to call me "Ulyong" when I was kid and it stuck as my pet name. I used to hate it growing up because it never made sense but I guess that was my core memory that lead me to that decision. "Embracing your past is what makes you unique", those were the words uttering in my mind when I was struggling to come up with a unique brand name. I was in the middle of my career dilemma when he passed away. So, from that tragic event, came this drive to pursue this dream. I never got the chance to ask him-- why the name? but I'm sure it's a hell lot better than Abraham studio, right? (and guys, that's for another story😉)

I was honoured to photograph Naty Sugguiyao aka "Batok Lady". We met during the 14th International Igorot Convention which was held in Auckland earlier this year. Auntie Naty was part of the narrative when the gates were opened for the world to see the legendary Apo Whang-od and the unique tattoo tradition of Kalinga-- "Batok".

Batok is the Kalinga term for tattoo. Back in the day, for men, it is significant for someone to be tattooed for it showed courage and showed the stages of being a Kalinga warrior; while for women, they symbolise maturity and beauty.
As for today, the significance of the tattoo is not only bound by Kalinga's culture but rather, being a Filipino with rich culture with a proud heritage. People from all over the world is still flocking to Buscalan to be tatooed by Apo Whang-od.

To me, Batok has a different sense of connection not only to my heritage but because of my Lola (grandma). She was one of the elders who adorned these intricate tattoos. Growing up, I remembered these vivid black ink that was placed around her chest all the way though both her arms. As a kid in the 90's, I could safely say that there was a stigma surrounding tattoos at the time, however, since my Lola had them, I was always fascinated by them and did not care, maybe that's why since early age I've always wanted a tattoo (unfortunately, I'm still at that stage, haha).

Unfortunately, my Lola passed away last year, and I wasn't lucky enough to attend her funeral. However, from a comforting point of view, every time I see a Batok, I would be reminded of my Lola who once shown the beauty of tattoos and taught me at an early stage about my heritage and the rich culture of Kalinga.

…and so for this, thank you Aunty Naty!
