Completing the Tongariro Alpine Crossing in winter is a truly special experience. The 19.4km day hike takes you up to almost 2,000m across volcanic craters and frozen alpine lakes, knee-deep snow and icy tracks. Crossing the South Crater in front of the cone of Mt Ngauruhoe (Mt Doom for fans) on a clear day is nothing short of breathtaking.

A little video I shot whilst out sailing on the stunning classic yacht, Rawhiti. She's been on the water since 1905 and was a dominant force on Sydney Harbour in the early 20th Century. She is now berthed in Auckland and still competes (successfully!) in many local regattas.
