Last-minute phone call, camera gear thrown in the car, and off we went with Gary Ashton Photography & Shane King-Turner

I've always admired astro photography but never really given it a proper go. Last night was my first serious attempt, and standing under a sky like this, it's easy to see why people become obsessed with it.

Plenty to learn and plenty of room for improvement, but for my first real I'm pretty stoked with how this image turned out.

What amazes me most is that Auckland was sitting just off to the right of the frame. Despite being so close to New Zealand's largest city, the night sky still put on an incredible show, with the Milky Way stretching overhead.
