Purple Poppy Day - We Will Remember Them 💜💜🧡
Purple Poppy Day is commemorated annually on February 24 in Aotearoa to honour the animals that served and died in conflicts
The day recognises the immense sacrifice and contribution of animals such as:
Horses – used extensively for transport, cavalry, and hauling artillery
Dogs – trained for scouting, message delivery, medical assistance, and detection work
Donkeys and mules – vital for carrying supplies in difficult terrain
Pigeons – used to deliver critical messages when other communication failed
Other support animals that played essential roles alongside military personnel
Purple Poppy Day serves as a reminder that animals have also been part of wartime service and have shown loyalty, courage, and endurance under extreme conditions. It encourages reflection, education, and respect for the often-overlooked animal victims of war 💜💜🧡
