On this week: Learn to use our spaces with hands-on workshops

We are a registered charity making photography tools and spaces available to our city… but where to start?

Begin your journey into exploring studio photography with Studio 101 on Thursday, 7:30pm. Get a taste of how you can control light to create powerful imagery.
$25/person. 1.5hrs.

Take a step into analogue practices with black and white film development and printmaking classes on Sunday. Bring a roll of your own film, process it, learn how to digitise it, and stick around to turn the film into a physical print using an enlarger.
$40/person. 2.5 hr B&W dev + scan
$40/ person. 3 hr B&W printmaking

CCC + PS = better photography in our city

We have just heard that the Christchurch City Council will continue to back our mission to make photography more accessible in our city.

The funding supports our operational costs, financial sustainability activities, and an artists’ support framework as Aotearoa’s only combined photographic community gallery, darkroom and studio facility.

Not only does this funding secure us well into 2027, it allows us to address our most fundamental costs so we can put our volunteer efforts into growing what we can deliver for our city.

Massive thanks to CCC for their backing us once again.

36EXP getting sequenced for the print

The first edition of our magazine, 36EXP, was sequenced this weekend by our volunteers.

Led by our editor Eva Lorenz, the team now has now sent it for graphic design by Irenie How: both former Photosynthesis resident artists.

The magazine is filled with interviews, analogue processes, archival photography, and fine art images made by local artists.

This project is partially supported by Creative Communities funding from Creative NZ, administered by the Christchurch City Council.

Our community spaces welcomes photographers of any age, ability and experience. We set our prices, provide resources, volunteering and community to lower barriers. Today we welcomed Hornby High School students into our studio to learn from our volunteers and experience the magic of creating photographic work.

Sunday night was the conclusion of the nominations for the 2027 resident artist. The Photosynthesis Trust meets tonight and decides who it will be. It’s a tough challenge: the calibre this year was fantastic. Applicants will hear tonight.

We continue our Techoman -sponsored exhibition season. It’s not too late to propose an exhibition for our season starting in October.

Our volunteers run two classes to empower you to use our community spaces with studio and darkroom 101 workshops.
