Fifty Canterbury artists, from household names to emerging talent, will transform vintage suitcases into one-of-a-kind artworks in a fundraising event where the story matters more than the signature.

Suitcase Stories, presented by Chapter 1 Gallery, brings together art, storytelling and fashion to raise funds for local causes, Koru Care Christchurch and Nurse Maude.

Each suitcase will carry a luggage tag with the artist’s personal inspiration behind the work. The identity of who painted each individual suitcase will remain the secret throughout the exhibition – every artwork will be judged solely on connection. You will know who the artists are just not what suitcase they painted.

“Every suitcase tells a story. You don’t know where that person has been or where they’re going. The people of Christchurch have many stories to tell,” says the woman? person behind Suitcase Stories,” Chapter1 Gallery founder Rachael Hemingway.

Here's a project I have been working on in the background recently.
A bit of context - I was approached earlier in the year by Brett Marshall, Director at the Air Force Museum of New Zealand who asked me if I could carve some special poppies. These would be given as gifts to special guests and dignitaries.

These are particularly unique as they are made from reclaimed Rimu that was originally the pews at the Wigram Airforce Base chapel. Alex the workshop Manager helped us hand pick some pieces from their wood store that ended up being used.

It was important to retain the visibility of the wood grain, I used a combination of red timber stain and acrylic wash to give them a vibrant red colour. It was a privilege to be able to produce these special mementos that have now been gifted around the world!

Well done to Consortium Construction and the Ōtautahi Community Housing Trust for receiving a Silver award at the recent 2026 New Zealand Commercial Project Awards. Completed and photographed December last year, This was for their Three Lanes Development, a 65-home community with community housing, affordable rentals and Progressive Home Ownership homes.

Well deserved and such an important project given the current spotlight on affordable and accessible housing nationwide.

Looking back on the year, I'm revisiting some of 2025's assignments as the new year rolls around!

I worked with InCommon to help create their latest series of Inclusivity Posters, a project that brings people from different cultures together through shared stories. This particular series was based on stories of play, a collaboration with Sport Canterbury and with support from Photosynthesis photography studios.

Looking back on the year, I'm revisiting some of 2025's assignments as the new year rolls around!

It was an absoloute joy photographing performances by Jolt Dance, including their Biennale performance with the NZTrio at The Piano, and as they lit up the City Centre in their colourful costumes as part of Gap Filler's Yarnachy festival.

Rakamaomao - South Hornby School
for Maguire and Harford Architects
The building’s name, Rakamaomao, and the broader cultural narrative—gifted by Ngāi Tahu—connect the new spaces to Te Manu Tukutuku’s whakapapa of winds and the school’s cultural narrative.
