Leaving Greece

The worst consequence of traveling out of peak season, 2nd only to the colder weather, is the reduced services.

For us that resulted in a ferry journey from Paros to Thessaloniki that took a total of 6 days (including 4 days wait on an island halfway). The worst of that was a 32 hour period of ferry hoping. Luckily the seas were calm the entire way and sunrises from the boat were absolutely stunning.

After sleeping on the open deck, one unhappy puppy, rental car hopping from Thessaloniki to the border and being caught in the middle of a farmers protest at the Bulgerian border, we somehow made it across in one peice.

Our plan from there was unnerving unknown

3 weeks on Paros 🇬🇷

We made it to Paros, our little island refuge too far south for the coming winter to chill our bones.

The island is all rock, clear water, white buildings with windows and doors in rich shades of the waves. Its hilly and steep in many places, but only takes 3-4 hours to circumnavigate by bike. Its hard to imaging how busy it must be in the off season.

We had rushed here in time for Richi to start house sitting for a family friend, which would see him through winter. Oli and I had absolutely no plans. Both absolutely wrecked we spent the first week in a little appartnement rental doing not much other than eating, sleeping, resting.

Richi's parents then arrived in his VW van, bringing us much needed winter supplies and a trailer we had ordered for the ever-growing Tuatara. We also moved out of the rental and into Richis van. I dont know how we got so lucky to meet a family so generous.

It took one more week for Hannah to become restless and anouther for Oli to agree it was time to move on. Now mid November, we somehow had to ride all the way back across to western Europe before Febuary... in a european winter which neither of us had ever experienced.

Its wasnt the typical summer island experiance but we will never forget it. The child versions of ourselves would never have believed we had made it all that way by bike 🚵‍♂️🚵‍♀️

Ps. There are no grapes that taste as good as the ones on Paros 🍇

3 days to Paros.

In the off season ferries to the island of Paros go only once per week, Friday at 7am from the port at the end of the Attica Peninsula. Realizing this on a Monday lead to what would be the most taxing challenge we would undertake on this trip across Europe. This is what those last few days of our trip looked like.

Day 3. 109km, head winds and a night of thunder storms. Grumpy puppy most of the day.

Day 2. Torrential rain, big elevation, stuck in peanutbutter mud where we got 2km in 4 hours and only 24km over the entire day. Camped behind a cemetery church absolutely drained.

Day 1. Making up for the day before, riding over a mountain, through the enormous city of Athens which never seemed to end. Stopped on a hill 5km from Port and 2am the morning of the ferry to sleep on the ground before getting to the ferry 7am. The only photo we took this day was of Richi in an Athens Lidl carpark holding pastry.
