Discover Fairlie #5 — Moreh: A Building Full of Memories
Sometimes you take a photograph without realising just how many stories are hidden inside it.
After sharing a photo taken from Talbot road ( Discover Fairlie #3 ) , Rosie commented that she was born in the old maternity hospital in Fairlie. I showed her a closer photo of this building and asked, “This one?”
“Yes. That’s it " She replied
Then more memories started appearing.
John shared that he was born here in 1952, in a room just to the left of the main entrance, and was delivered by Dr Terry O’Brien.
He also remembered the sadness when the old Cottage Hospital eventually closed, and spoke warmly about Alison and the care she later brought to this place.
Margaret then shared that she was born here in September 1951. There was snow on the ground when she was born, and Dr Terry O’Brien brought her into the world too.
This building was once Fairlie’s Cottage/Maternity Hospital, a place where many local lives began.
Years later, it became Moreh Home, where the story almost came full circle — a building that had once welcomed babies into the world became a place of care for Fairlie’s older generation.
Moreh cared for local people for more than 40 years before closing in 2021.
Today, the building is privately owned and has begun another chapter of its long life.
