Te Rua-o-te-Moko is the traditional Kāi Tahu name for Fiordland, meaning “the chiselled face” or “the carved face.” According to Kāi Tahu tradition, the great explorer Tamatea, travelling through the region aboard the Takitimu waka, named the land after the deep grooves carved into the towering fiord walls, which reminded him of the tattooed face of a chief. The landscape itself is also deeply connected to the traditions of Tū Te Rakiwhānoa, the master carver who shaped the mountains, valleys and fiords of Fiordland.
