I met Sade when I taught her in her year 10 English class. A year or two later, I briefly taught her sister, Aisha, who had the most captivating green eyes.

I knew their father .official was a musician, but I had never seen him perform…had never seen a show of his advertised!

So, over 20 years on when I saw he was performing at my regular haunt , I KNEW I had to go to photograph him.

I sent him an email telling him my fond memories of his daughters and asking to photograph his show.

It was an amazing performance of powerful, rocky blues, performed by a man who had a stage presence that made everyone feel like he was playing in their lounge, having a musical conversation just with them.

But out in the foyer, taking the tickets, was someone else who had her own unmistakable charisma. Paul’s third daughter, Sanura. She had Aisha’s green eyes, and Julia Roberts’ million dollar smile.

The foyer of a comedy club is not the ideal place to photograph someone, but Sanura’s natural beauty transcended the mundane environment.

The music with this post is by Paul, titled Sanura.

An umbrella made by Audrey Baldwin and kindly loaned to me by its subsequent owner has finally gotten some much-deserved use…

Networking with the lovely and talented .hulme and quickly morphed into an impromptu makeup session and photoshoot. Although Raman’s work can’t easily be seen in these moody pictures, it really is exquisite!

Keep an eye out for more pictures to come out of future collaborations by the three of us!

I was honoured to be able to help photograph the wedding of this man’s son and his daughter-in-law last week.

I have always thought older traditional Sikh men looked fantastically photogenic with their turbans and beards, but I had never felt forward enough to ask to photograph one.

And then, by a stroke of Providence or incredibly good luck, I got asked out of the blue to photograph a Sikh wedding.

What an INCREDIBLE experience!!! I was the only Pakeha there on each of the three days, and likely the only one who didn’t speak Punjabi. But I was treated like a dear friend rather than a humble outsider providing a service.

Everyone was incredibly hospitable, warm, generous and kind.

If you ever get the chance to enjoy Punjabi hospitality, seize the opportunity with both hands! It will be an experience you will never forget.

But if you prefer your white bread, your butter, your meat and 2 veg, then “pass out of [the cultural] threshing floor/into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears…”

As for me, I am blessed to greet the newcomer to our adopted land with a hearty “Sat Sri Akal!” And my humble effort and reminding them that — in my heart, at least, They Are Us — has been repaid a thousand fold when, at their joyful celebration they took me into their fold and said, “and You are Us!”

Sat Sri Akal, dhanvaad and Shukrana. 🫶🏻🙏🫶🏻

Two of my favourite zombies in the EnZomble of ’s The Addams Family are played by my dear friends (Bee Rose) and (Leah “Nemo” Williams).

The leads are AMAZING and deserve all the hype they’ve gotten.

But Zombies are people too! And they deserve recognition for their tallent and hard work!

And these two zombies, in particular, were very kind to let me photograph them in their semi-corporeal forums!

Come see The Addams Family during their last two shows! Saturday matinee, plus Saturday night! !

You have to be just the right kind of “kooky and creepy” to fully appreciate The Addams Family.
And even more so to spend five months of your life rehearsing the singing, the dancing and the zombie-like undead movements required to be in the show’s enZomble!
But we really have to take our hats off to the undead stewardess .hawess who not only transformed into a zombie, but then very gamely allowed me to take her picture in such a way to make her look like a bobblehead!
We assure you the look is caused by a fisheye lens. Happily, the computer can automatically correct the distortion caused by the lens. That’s what you will see in the last picture.
Come to the show and decide for yourself if the computer got it right!
As always, a fantastic production from

A big shout out to all the actors, creatives and crew.
Keep an eye out for the insanely talented Caelan Thomas, the musical director who REALLY looks like he should be playing Toccata and Fugue in D minor!
In the meantime, Stewardess Lydia’s plaintive eyes ask….”have you bought your tickets yet….!!!”

Not every cosplayer comes complete with their own Raven, brought specially from Australia.
But this is not just any cosplayer, nor is just any cosplay gathering.

Rather, it is a three day extravaganza of steampunk, fantasy, Rockabilly Pinup, Alice in Wonderland, anime and just about any OC you can imagine. (A sextant dress springs to mind!!)

But you will notice that our posed and elegant Australian friend is wearing a purple sash.

Note to 2027 attendees: the sky is the limit, and the bar is set very high indeed.

Happily, the only real criteria is that you have fun!

Come to Fantasizers Festival 2027 on Waitangi weekend and let your imagination go wild!

**which version do you like best? #1 or #2?**

It was a privilege and a pleasure to photograph two years ago at Armageddon.

Neither of us recognized the other at first, but we made the connection eventually!

Meet Lamb from Cult of the Lamb.

Or, as I prefer to think of her: Lamb Pie.

Her costume was exquisite, but with such perfectly red eyes and arrestingly white hair, I can’t resist a simple but stunning headshot.

The rest of her outfit, gentle reader, is left for you to imagine….or perhaps to see at the next Christchurch Armageddon!

Or you may see more of Pie’s creations at a fashion show runway near you!

Almost, Maine is such a lovely little town. Full of earnest characters who are finding - and sometimes losing - love.
It’s like “Love, Actually” but for the stage. Or like “Our Town” only funny and set in the 21st Century.
I have seen it 3 times, and each time I enjoyed it more than the last.
Tonight I will go for a fourth.
Join me? Tonight at 7:30, the Ngaio Marsh Theatre, in the UCSA building.

Tickets are only $20/$18, but if you use the promo code “snowball” you will get $5 off…(just don’t tell anyone you heard it from me, please. Let’s keep it our secret!

A tour de force that you will be glad you saw, and that you will be thinking about for weeks to come.

Meet “Stockings” aka “Stocking Anarchy” from a rather improbably named anime that maybe shall remain nameless for now! 😂

I met Stockings at in Christchurch on Sunday. Like any cosplayer with vivid contacts and an outfit to match, my eye was immediately caught.
Alas, her name was not! (Not caught, that is…) so if you know Stockings, please tag her in the comments! Otherwise perhaps we will see her again at
Thanks to Sticking Anarchy and all the cosplayers who very patiently posed for me Japan Fiesta.

And thanks to for organising the cosplay parade!
I look forward to seeing you all again soon at Christchurch’s Armageddon!
