A few moments from today with South swell pumping into Midway Beach

Raglan would have to be one of the most scenic corners of NZ, and with the WSL rolling into town I took a dig into the archives. I’ve been lucky enough to spend a bit of time there and always tried to grab a shots of the area in between shooting surf. Some of these shots were licensed to the WSL and appear throughout the event broadcast, plus a handful of waves from the crew tearing the place to pieces. Stoked to see an event of international calibre being run there - Manu Bay is a great setup

After a ferocious day yesterday bearing the brunt of Cyclone Vaianu we woke to an absolute beauty this morning. Amazing how quickly things can change. Back to regular programming ✌️

First signs of Cyclone Vaianu this morning with a building swell pouring in towards the southern end of Wainui.

The swell is predicted to continue building, peaking at around 4.5 metres from 3pm onwards. Swell direction is from the northeast with a 10 second period, and is forecast to be closer to 8.5 metres 50km offshore. This is likely to coincide with 35-45 knot onshore winds.

Images were taken at 7:15am.

When Wainui lights up with two solid swells crossing over it’s a sight to behold. You see it right away. Shifting peaks and stacked lines unloading onto well-formed sand.

Last week’s swell event was a summer standout. The forecast was initially hard to pin down with heavy rain warnings and onshore winds on the menu. But the Gisborne region was spared the worst of it with the winds swinging offshore earlier than predicted.

What followed were three straight days ranging from truly epic to very fun, and everything in between.
