An interesting find on our last trip to northern West Coast.How we didnt know about the Waimangaroa cemetery before now astounds me given the fact that one of our passions is finding and exploring the Coasts amazing cemeteries and learning of the regions history thru there very existence.
The cemetery is a quiet little piece of the Denniston story with a beautiful outlook for the resting souls. With the ground up on the Hill being far too hard to dig, there was no cemetery at Denniston. When someone died, they had to make the journey down the Incline to Waimangaroa for their final resting place.
These old headstones tell a story.
They belonged to the miners, their wives, families and children who made a life up there on the Hill.

Here is a hidden gem. A wet day in Westport uncovered this slice of local history.From the outside it looks very uninviting and tbh it suffers from a lack of good quality marketing and wider exposure to the visitors of the town but once you commit to the experience its simply a wonderful education to the Coasts coal mining history and in particular Bullers mining history.

A moment of serendipity.
