Grateful to Good Magazine for featuring an article about my recent Egypt pilgrimage which reignited my passion for photography. Thank you Justine Jamieson for the suggestion.

Egypt first called to me when I was a child. I wanted to be an Egyptologist. I was fascinated, genuinely obsessed, with ancient Egyptian culture in that

“Five stars is not enough for Cari Hill. She joined us on our Egyptian Priestesses Pilgrimage and captured the absolute magic of our journey. Cari has a rare gift for blending into sacred moments without ever disrupting the energy. The intimate photos she took are breathtaking, soulful, and filled with emotion. She didn’t just take pictures; she captured the essence of our sisterhood and the depth of our experiences. These photos are timeless pieces of art that I will treasure forever. If you need a photographer who can capture the unseen and the deeply personal, hire Cari. Thank you, Cari, for preserving these memories so beautifully.”

We decided to get a group tattoo—an ankh.
It was the symbol that called to all of us, the one that felt less like a choice and more like a remembering. A marker of something far deeper than this lifetime. Seven women, brought together to walk the sacred lands of Kemet… a place that felt both ancient and intimately familiar, as though our bones already knew the way.

What unfolded was never just about getting inked. It became ritual.
An activation.

As the needle met skin, something opened.
Each of us dropped into our own inner worlds—images, memories, sensations moving through us like currents. It wasn’t gentle for everyone. One woman’s body rejected the intensity; she vomited midway through and trembled as something moved through her, clearing, shifting, releasing. It was raw. It was real. It was sacred.

Finding a way to do this in Cairo was its own initiation. Tattooing is culturally taboo there—hidden, whispered, not easily accessed. Prices were high, doors unclear. It required trust, surrender, and a willingness to be guided.

Assai, who is Russian, became the bridge that brought it all together. And somehow, we found ourselves sitting with a Ukrainian tattoo artist.

Two humans from countries at war…
meeting in peace,
to facilitate something sacred.

There was an ease between them, a quiet understanding that needed no explanation. One dressed in black, the other in white. One held a masculine energy, the other feminine. As they worked, their bodies mirrored something ancient—like a living symbol of duality, of balance, of birth itself. Yin and yang, creation through contrast.

It was more than coincidence.
It felt orchestrated.

And when it was done, they sang together.
Softly, naturally—like it had always been waiting to happen.

Not in our language, but in one they both knew.
A shared thread, untouched by conflict.

And in that moment, everything softened.
The noise of the world fell away, and what remained was something simple and true—
connection, beyond identity.

The ankh now lives on our skin, but it was never just about the symbol.
It is a key.
A remembrance.
A quiet vow to carry what we touched there back into our lives.
