Been meaning to show off these photos of the cuzzy Kawana’s whakairo mahi 😮‍💨✨⁠ aka Guv ⁠

He made this taonga as a gift for some Chinese VIPs while we were over there for another kaupapa. Beautifully detailed, the craftsmanship is 🤌🏽🤌🏽🤌🏽. Also crack up knowing he was still doing a mad dash trying to finish parts of it in the hotel room beforehand 😂 Any other carvers take their chisels on international trips or nah?⁠

I love the textures, the eyes, and the full-bodied flow of the patterns throughout the whole piece.⁠

So anyway we quickly set up a photoshoot in his hotel room using a shiny drawer/table, a wooden wall panel, and one flash before it was taken to the hui to be gifted 😆

Just updating the IG feed because it constantly looks like a bunch of haka/conference collabs 😂 so this is also a reminder that I do actually photograph other things too.⁠

These were taken by my intern while we were testing lighting + backdrops ahead of a client headshot shoot. I’m not always this organised 😅 but as the saying goes, preparation is key. ⁠
⁠
It’s better to spend time figuring things out beforehand than turning up and guessing on the day. Means I can focus more on the people in front of the camera instead of stressing about gear, lighting or setups.⁠

But… I’m also pretty good at just winging it too haha!

Te Ara o Tamahae - day one.

Made a video from our hīkoi over Easter weekend.
I did this section 10 years ago, not really knowing what I was getting into. Doing it again, I was keen as but also dreading certain areas like the Kakī… which still, yup, was just as dreadful hahaha.
But aside from the scary bits, it was an amazing, beautiful, intense, grounding and challenging experience, he oranga wairua 🌿🌈✨
You don’t see the freaky part here on the Kakī where I thought I might not make it (lol not lol), because I needed both hands to brace myself, cling to tree roots, and stop myself from rolling down the other side, but here’s a glimpse into the rest of it anyway.
Grateful for people like Ike & Puti 🫶🏾 who create these opportunities for us, and for the rest of our hīkoi crew too!!

p.s. the video is a bit long lol 🤷🏽‍♀️
