🏁 Livery of the Week 🏁

One thing motorsport has never lacked is iconic liveries. From grassroots club racing through to top-level GT and touring cars, some designs simply stand out the moment they hit the circuit.

Each week I’ll be sharing one of my favourite liveries that I’ve captured from race meetings and events around New Zealand — past and present — showcasing some of the incredible cars, colours, and creativity that make motorsport so visually unique.

Some will be iconic. Some underrated. Some loud enough to hurt your eyes from the other side of the circuit.

Feel free to share your favourites along the way as well — because every motorsport fan has that one livery they’ll defend forever.

The countdown is on for the NZIGP Season Finale at Hampton Downs Motorsport Park — and next weekend is shaping up to be a fantastic way to close out the season.

With a huge mix of machinery, passionate competitors, and plenty of on-track action expected across the weekend, the finale is set to deliver everything that makes New Zealand motorsport so special. One final chance this season for drivers and teams to leave their mark before the curtain closes.

I’ll be trackside throughout the event capturing the racing, atmosphere, and all the moments in between for Motorsport Visuals.

Raw speed in all its forms—the NZ Sports Car Racing & Formula Racing NZ field put on a proper show at the NZIGP Spirit of ANZAC at Taupo International Motorsport Park . With a full grid of purpose-built machinery, from high-downforce sports cars to classic and modern open-wheelers, this was a race that rewarded commitment, precision, and outright pace.

At the front, it was sharp and relentless, while throughout the field drivers were kept honest with close racing and constant pressure. The contrast between the cars only added to it—different strengths, different lines, but all chasing the same result. It’s not often you get this kind of variety in one race, and when it all comes together like this, it’s something special to watch.

Race 2 for the HVRA - Historic & Vintage Racing Association NZ Inc and ERC Classic Race Series (NZ) at the NZIGP Spirit of ANZAC delivered a far more straightforward start to proceedings at Taupo International Motorsport Park , with clear skies and uninterrupted track time from the outset. With no fog to contend with, the full field was able to settle into rhythm immediately, and it showed—drivers wasted no time getting down to business, producing a race that flowed cleanly while still offering plenty of close, respectful battles throughout the pack.

The mixed grid once again proved its worth, with everything from nimble European machinery to thundering American muscle and classic touring cars sharing the circuit. Pace differences kept the racing dynamic, with constant position changes and traffic management playing a key role, yet the standard of driving remained consistently tidy. It was a fitting follow-up to an unusual earlier session—this time with ideal conditions, the field delivered exactly what you’d expect from historic racing at its best: competitive, controlled, and thoroughly enjoyable to watch.

The NZ Six North Island 1 Hour Enduro at the NZIGP Spirit of ANZAC delivered exactly what you’d expect from an hour-long scrap at Taupo International Motorsport Park —hard racing, strategy calls, and just enough chaos to keep everyone honest. Christina Orr-West brought it home at the front after a consistent and composed drive, stopping the clock at 1:00:27.621 and setting the fastest lap of the race with a 1:46.404. Brent Cooper kept the pressure on to secure second, while Sheryl Hanright rounded out the podium after a strong run, keeping things tidy as others around her hit trouble. Behind them, it was a race of attrition with several crews sidelined before the chequered flag, proving once again that surviving the full hour is half the battle.

Plenty of character in the paddock too—James Cooper turning up without his race suit and having to borrow one, rebranding himself for the day as James “Douglas”. Not the ideal start to an enduro weekend, but he still made it to the grid and got stuck in before his race came to an early end. He wasn’t alone either, with several strong contenders including Hayden Rau, Brydon Hickson and Peter Rine all sidelined before the finish, underlining just how unforgiving the one-hour format can be when reliability comes into play.

Big grids, big noise, and a proper test of endurance—the NZV8 Ute Racing Series turned it on at the NZIGP Spirit of ANZAC at Taupo International Motorsport Park . With a longer format on the table, it wasn’t just about outright pace; it was about keeping things tidy, managing tyres, and working through traffic without losing momentum. Lap after lap, the field stayed tightly packed, with plenty of pressure being applied but just as much discipline on display.

At the front, it was all about consistency and race management, while through the midfield there was no shortage of close racing and position changes as drivers sized each other up and picked their moments. The utes might look like workhorses, but there’s nothing casual about the way they’re driven—committed, controlled, and always entertaining. A strong showing from the entire field and a reminder that when these guys go endurance racing, it’s still every bit as competitive—just with a bit more thinking involved.

The final day of the NZIGP Spirit of ANZAC at Taupo International Motorsport Park didn’t exactly start to plan, with heavy fog forcing a rethink and ultimately combining the remaining HVRA - Historic & Vintage Racing Association NZ Inc , and ERC Classic Race Series (NZ) handicap races into one standout grid. What followed was a proper old-school showcase—22 cars spanning eras and styles, all sharing the same bit of tarmac and making it look exactly how historic racing should.

From tight packs charging down the straight to classic tin-top battles through the infield, the combined field delivered something special—variety, noise, and just enough chaos to keep it honest. It’s not often you see such a diverse grid come together like this, and even less often that it works as well as it did. Fog may have reshuffled the schedule, but in the end it handed us one of the most memorable sessions of the weekend.

Some cars get restored. Others get rescued. The Africa Racing Team Ford Mk1 Es**rt Historic Racecar Build. Somewhere in between—with a bit of attitude thrown in for good measure.

After spending 15 years quietly ageing in a shed in Opotaki, this chassis could’ve easily been forgotten. Instead, it found its way into Chris Greaney’s workshop, where it apparently spent a fair bit of time questioning its life choices—mainly what engine it was going to end up with. Fast forward to now, and it’s very much figured itself out.

And yes, it’s exactly as loud and unapologetic as it looks.

It’s not just about the bold, “you can’t miss it” livery either—the backstory behind this car is what makes it properly special. From sitting idle for years to being brought back to life and back on track, it’s a proper grassroots rebuild done the right way.

Now it’s back where it belongs—low, wide, and looking like it’s ready to pick a fight with every corner on the circuit.

The European Racing Classics field delivered a proper mixed-era spectacle for the Flag Drop/Split Grid race at the NZIGP Spirit of ANZAC, with heavy fog delaying proceedings before the field was finally unleashed with everything from nimble Minis to thundering muscle and sharp modern machinery sharing the Taupō tarmac. It was Ray Williams who came out on top, bringing it home for the win in 15:02.785 despite nursing a late mechanical issue. Mark Stockton pushed hard all race to finish just 2.140 seconds back with a 15:04.925, while Mark Garney completed the podium with a 15:20.485 after a steady and composed drive.

Behind them, the racing stayed tight right through the field, with Ken Williams 15:30.292 and Peter Dudson 15:54.445 battling through their stints, and John Browne rounding things out in 15:54.913. A race that proved reliability and racecraft still count for everything—especially when the pressure is on and the chequered flag is within reach.
