In 2015 I through hiked Te Araroa from Cape Reinga to Bluff. Tomorrow (Feb 26) is kickoff for linking the 3000km between those two destinations a bit more quickly! I'll have company too, in the form of and around 200 others taking part in the 10th anniversary Tour Aotearoa.

Hana rode the inaugural event back in 2016, a few months before we began our four year Alaska - Ushuaia ride.

I'm riding my Fenrir Stainless, set up with bags and some components inc their beautiful new CTRL pedals. Thanks to for tons of support with other gear

For this year's Tour Te Waipounamu bikepacking race I was behind my camera lens, rather than my handlebars. I spent 4.5 days covering the Canterbury section of the race, from Hurunui River North Branch to Benmore Dam. I had an absolute blast being close to some of the action and walking and riding into some beautiful spots on the course.

Already damp conditions with more surface water than usual were made extra difficult by extensive rainfall up to the morning of day 3 of the race, which rose rivers to hazardous levels and tested riders decision making and gear.

There was lots of drama throughout the field and exciting races for both mens and womens podium spots.

The 2026 Tour Te Waipounamu bikepacking race kicks off at 7am Sunday 25th January 🏁

After finishing in the 2021, 2022 and 2024 editions I'm going to be behind the lens, instead of my handlebars, this year. I'm excited to be part of the media team and will be capturing the Canterbury section of the race from Lake Sumner down to Benmore Dam.

Follow for images and stories as this gnarly back country bikepacking race unfolds and keep out for posts here too πŸ‘€ I'll share content as much as time allows in my packed location schedule.

Best of luck to all the riders this year πŸ‘Š

Scenes from the ancient city of Fez, Morocco.

Following the Route of the Caravans southbound, Fez was the third of Morocco's cities that we stayed in (after Tangier and Chefchaouen). It was still early in our ride and we were regaining fitness for back to back riding days and touring loads, so we rested and explored there for two days.

There was so much novelty to the experience of Fez though that it felt like longer. After Tangier's compact hillside medina and Chefchaouen's cheerful blue, Fez's narrow, complicated and sprawling medina was more claustrophobic, decayed and grimier. Entering the city's imposing gates and wandering the medina is a journey back through over 1000 years of history, the numerous mosques, madrasas and souks making this city Morocco's spiritual centre.
