On the drive over to photograph this mural at Te Puke Primary the other week, I was hopeful I’d get the chance to capture not just the artwork but how it connected with the tamariki who see it every day.

As it turned out, a group of kids wandered over while we were shooting to admire ’s work and this first image was the result 🥰

Titled Puawānanga after the Clematis flower (also known as the flower of learning), the mural was a collaboration brought to life by Millie, the school’s principal, local iwi, students, and the school board.

I love documenting how things get made.

These detail shots for Speedy Signs Tauranga spotlight the hands-on work that goes into producing high-quality signage, from colour-matching to careful vinyl placement.

And what I love love love about detail shots is how much storytelling context they provide in your marketing and sales imagery.

They might be small moments, but they pack a big emotional punch.

Spent a morning out at Huria Rugby field last week documenting artist Marsh Pearson as he brought some fresh life to the old club mural.

The refreshed artwork brought in the help of local rangatahi, present and past players ( pictured ) to contribute to the painting process and pays tribute to the legacy of grassroots rugby at Huria.

Photographed on behalf of .bop , this mural was supported by the Western Bay Mini Arts Grants

Wāhine Tākai ki te Mātauranga - Women Wrapped in Knowledge.

It was a privilege to photograph both the karakia blessing and artist portraits for Wāhine Tākai ki te Mātauranga, a new mural by mana whenua artist Arohanoa Mathews on behalf of .bop last week.

To quote on her work:“This name reflects the beauty and strength of wāhine Māori – those who carry mātauranga like a cloak and move through the world with purpose. In a rapidly changing world, knowledge remains our most powerful protection. This mural is a call to uplift wāhine as leaders and knowledge-holders in our communities.“

I love documenting not just these beautiful works but the real people and stories that are woven through them which make up the heart of our city.

From a blank wall to a beautiful masterpiece - I shot these images last year of and her stunning mural created as part of ‘s Tauranga Tiahuia mural project - which highlighted the scale of Millie’s vibrant work while also sneaking in a few updated artist portraits.

I distinctly remember this being my last job before heading off on maternity leave - we kept to a short shoot time and the waddling around with my camera bag was getting a little hilarious by this point 😆

But loved photographing Millie and was very happy with how these turned out!

I’m happy to say that I’m now BACK from maternity leave and booking portraits and events for 2025.

Drop me an email at [email protected] or a friendly hello via DM. 🌞

Easing myself back into shooting after such a beautiful first maternity leave! Turns out the rubbish bag covering my camera at the event was multifunctional 😂- protection from the coloured powder but also had fun partially covering my lens and love how it turned out.

Hello! It’s me! For those not on my newsletter or missed it on IG stories you may not know that:

a) I’m currently preggo with our first lil babe

b) and have just 2 & a bit months left before I take a pause for maternity leave ( starting mid July )

From there I’m planning on taking a 6 month pause to settle into new mamahood.

Due to being someone who likes to give her 100% love and attention to each and every piece of work I do, the spaces to work with me are limited so that I can balance the quality of my work with the energy required of growing a tiny human ☺️.

So photos spaces with me are limited before I head away. ( and those available are prioritised to my existing clients first)

If a branding shoot has been on your mind for the future, feel free to still reach out.

These things do take time to plan and I’m happy to have a quick chat or for those needing more direction, we can organise a 60-90 min consult session that will set you up for success when it comes to maximising value from your sales & marketing imagery.

Xx,
Jess

Very cool to see this image on the cover of last month. I had the absolute pleasure of photographing 3 different artists in their studios on behalf of .bop in promotion of the BOP Open Studios art trail.

Featured in this post is .briceno.art whose little studio is tucked up cozily beneath her house.

Walking inside her studio is “like stepping inside one of her paintings. You get a sense of being wrapped in a patchwork quilt. Cosy and colourful…”
