Early morning contemplation at Oamaru Pier.
Mike & I crawled out of bed early on a very cold morning, in the hope of getting a sunrise. Sadly it turned out to be a bit of a fizzer, so I ended up with this black & white shot instead!

The core of the Milky Way rises over the horizon a bit past my bedtime this time of the year. But when you're visiting a dark sky sanctuary (Great Barrier Island) it would be rude not to attempt one night shot. There was no moon so it was VERY dark. Our small torches barely lit the area around our feet and the waves sounded much closer than they actually were. The only other light, apart from the stars, was the occasional flash of lightning from the clouds building from the left. Fortunately it didn't rain until we were tucked up in bed!
