The endless clear sky proved a little frustrating for landscape photography during our recent trip to the Ashburton Lakes. But if there's one thing we night Owls love is a clear sky (even if the temp was dropping to -5C and the gas for the heating ran out in the middle of the night 🥶)

The core of the Milky Way rises over the horizon a bit past my bedtime this time of the year. But when you're visiting a dark sky sanctuary (Great Barrier Island) it would be rude not to attempt one night shot. There was no moon so it was VERY dark. Our small torches barely lit the area around our feet and the waves sounded much closer than they actually were. The only other light, apart from the stars, was the occasional flash of lightning from the clouds building from the left. Fortunately it didn't rain until we were tucked up in bed!

Mike & I had such a fun evening at this lone tree near Tapu Bay with Rina Sjardin-Thompson last night, watching the sky do its thing.

Previous images that Heather and I posted from Alpe di Siusi had wonderful evening light illuminating the mountains. But as it is known for being a morning location, for photography, we of course trudged up the hill again the following morning, before sunrise. The clear, featureless sky was a warning that we were not going to be lucky twice. Sure enough, as soon as the sun peaked above the mountains, straight into our lenses, the glare made capturing anything interesting impossible. Or so I thought. Time has lessened the disappointment from that morning and I have now re-visited the images with a different mindset. The photos may not be as dramatic as our evening shots, but they are still a nice reminder of our visit to a wonderful location.
