Chuffed to receive Honours for my photo of a Kaka in flight at the New Plymouth Photography Club's "Things that fly" competition. I took this photo at the Pukaha National Wildlife Centre when we were exploring the Wairarapa in December. I also received Excellence for this black and white image of a top dressing plane that I took from our place when we lived in Rotorua.

Things looked promising for capturing the eclipse of the moon last night. However, just as I expected to see the shadow of the earth start moving across the moon at 10:40 p.m., the cloud covered the moon. The cloud looked fairly extensive, so I pacted up and headed to bed. Apparently, the cloud did clear later during the night, and some got some images, but by then I was sound asleep, where most people are at that time of night.πŸ™‚

Significant G4 solar storm at present. The Kp index is currently 8 out of 9, and we've got cloud in New Plymouth until probably Friday! πŸ˜πŸ™‚ There's going to be some great Aurora photos from the South Island, I'm sure. πŸ™‚

From our overnight stay near Lake Wairarapa we headed down to the south coast, and east along the Cape Palliser Road until we reached the fishing village of NgaWi. There was a strong south westerly wind blowing, with the odd shower, so the boats stayed high and dry. The unique feature at NgaWi is that the boats are launched and retrieved with the help of a lineup of bulldozers of various ages and sizes. It was grey and overcast when we arrived. There’s a spot to park overnight for a gold coin donation, right by the sea. Just before sunset the sun came out giving some lovely golden light, contrasting nicely with the dark clouds. And then some nice colour in the clouds after sunset.

It's 52 kms from Castlepoint to Riversdale. There's no coastal road, so we had to drive inland and then south to get to the seaside holiday town. Though quite windy, it was a pleasant drive through some nice farm land, and very little traffic, so I could take our time and enjoy the view, mainly thinking about how Noah's flood had shaped these wide valleys between the big hills with only tiny creeks which couldn't possibly have formed these wide flat valleys. There's a NZ Motorcaravan park in Riversdale which we took advantage of. At $10 a night for the two of us, who wouldn't? After a bite to eat in the motorhome, we set off to check out the beach. Unfortunately there was a cold wind coming off the sea, but it looked like a great spot for a family beach holiday, particularly as there's an active Surf Lifesaving club with life guards keeping a careful eye on the few that were out swimming in the surf. Next door to the NZMCA park was a rather cute old church which had an open sign outside, but no one to be seen when we had a look inside.

Leaving Castlepoint, we decided to detour a few minutes up the coast to Sandy Bay, and the Mataikona Rocks geological feature. The road was pretty narrow in places, but it was worth it. Mataikona Rocks is a geological feature where tilted sedimentary rock layers have been exposed below the high water mark. Plus a couple of photos looking south back to Castlepoint.

Our third day at Castlepoint, and I poked my head out the motorhome door at about sunrise to see what might be happening, and grabbed my camera and took a few sunrise shots. Glad I crawled out of bed just in time. πŸ™‚
