Jack’s Bay, Catlins. This southern coastline is rugged and has an untouched beauty. I can’t wait to come back and spend more time exploring this wild part of NZ.

Where the wild things are. The beautiful wind blown macrocarpa trees at Slope Point in the Catlins, Southland, New Zealand. Straight out of a storybook.

A wonderful person said to me recently about photographing what makes your heart glow, well it was childlike joy seeing this handsome fella on a wild coastline at Waipapa Point, Catlins. Kept my distance and used my Tamron 100-400mm. He waddled out of the ocean right up onto this sand platform sunning himself, he was aware that I was there but enough distance for both of us to feel comfortable. Getting out to see these locations has been a dream come true.

A beautiful clear day up the top of the Mangorei Track looking out at Mt Taranaki. Freezing temperatures and extremely windy so no reflections the day I went but how stunning is this mountain and I love the tussocks. It’s a 3 hour trek up to the top, incredible views and well worth it, take warm clothing and plenty of drinking water and lots of snacks. I would only do this track in good weather conditions.

On the doorstep of Aoraki/Mount Cook is Lake Pukaki, it’s distinctive blue colouring created by finely ground glacial rock particles. Mt Cook, NZ’s tallest peak just visible in the background. Pukaki is the largest of three alpine lakes in the Mackenzie basin on the South Island of NZ. It’s just 2h 40 mins from Queenstown. A further half hour drive lakeside and you will reach Aoraki Mt Cook, incredible scenery, just magnificent.

Paradise is a historic property close to Glenorchy where you can experience a wilderness overnight stay in one of the rustic cabins. I stayed two nights in Dart Hut, this was my view. Being isolated in this majestic landscape was a deeply reflective experience, no interruptions from the outside world, just you and the view.

The old Eastburn hut at the entrance to the Crown Range mountains, just a short drive from here to the Cardrona ski field and definitely worth a stop at the Cardrona Pub for some mulled wine around the fire.
