Peter Latham - Visual Artist

Peter Latham - Visual Artist Peter’s passionate pursuit of N.Z. Aotearoa's landscape has amassed a coveted portfolio of dynamic scenes that portray the land in a unique & powerful way.

Limited edition prints rise in value for collectors through Print Appreciation Levels. No AI. For me, photography is an all-consuming passionate expression of what I see. For as long as I can remember, I have invested fortunes into camera equipment & I long dreamt of being a landscape photographer. Back in the late 80’s I worked in a camera store in Auckland & read every photo magazine cover to co

ver, extracting as much inspiration as I could, then snapped away with my Canon T70 (which was quite flash at the time!) Mobile phones were portable bricks & who had heard of Apple, wasn’t that a fruit? There is no doubt that we kiwis live in the finest little country in the world. We may look small on a map but we punch way above our weight in everything we do, whether that be on the rugby field, perfecting the art of coffee or producing some of the world’s finest thinkers and innovators. And when it comes to our landscape, we pack more variety & grandeur into every corner than anywhere else. Not that it makes my job easy, one is never far from the ocean & that means one thing - every changing weather & plenty of the wet variety! It really takes a lifetime to do justice to these great lands, that is my quest. My mission is to share what I am privileged to see with as much of the world as I can & encourage fellow kiwis to appreciate & protect our treasured home. My first tour of the south island was in February 1988. My sister & family from Switzerland had returned home on holiday & we did a 2 week “tiki tour” down south. I was constantly wanting to stop & take photos, Anne (sis) was forever yelling “Peter, hurry up”! Envying scores of cyclists touring the island, I decided that that was the way to do it & so 12 months later I did. I spent 6 months washing dishes at weekends to fund new camera equipment, this time a brand new Bronica ETRS 645. I went on to spend many years travelling the world as a photographer aboard cruise ships, returning home to Auckland in 2003, when I began experimenting with a large format printer & printing onto canvas. After much trial & error, I focused my attention towards iconic images of NZ & began to establish relationships with prominent art galleries. 10 years ago, many people were reluctant to appreciate photography as "art", so I experimented with different digital techniques to try & overcome this. Times have changed & we are now catching up with the rest of the world, where fine art photography is coveted & collectors regularly invest six-figure sums for prized works. From the outset, I developed my signature box frames for mounting my stretched canvases & these proved enormously popular with my range of triptychs. Ever wishing to innovate, I created an acrylic "ice cube" to house my work "Ice Arch" & then diversified to offer my prints on 100% cotton rag, fine art paper. I recently developed my oval frames for both paper & canvas prints & am now pioneering high-resolution "Art On Glass" - a very difficult medium to master, but the results are astounding & the potential is very exciting. Trust me, photography is a very demanding profession. The illiusion is that I spend a lot of my time in the field, but in reality, 95% of my time is spent keeping up with print production, gallery & client visits plus general administration. I'm forever pushing myself to deliver the best possible results & service I can. I love the challenge, but the time & investment is massive - to earn a living as an artist in NZ is far from easy! I ship my work to clients around the world, with collectors including the family of the famous Swedish camera manufacturer, Hasselblad. Corporate clients include household names such as TVNZ, Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade, Ministry of Primary Industries, Glaxo Smith Kline, Southern Cross & Ascot Hospitals, Rydges Hotel, NZ Steel, Icebreaker, Metlife Care, Vector Arena & many more...

“The River’s Cathedral”

“Having been on my list for ages, I recently canoed the Whanganui River over five days, camping alongside the river. Carrying precious camera equipment was always going to be a gamble & I had to choose those moments using it on the river very carefully. On the third day this spectacular riverbank caught my eye, but it was really quite challenging to capture - keeping my canoe steady without drifting away while I shot multiple frames was not easy (fortunately I shot as many as I did, as all but two frames were spoilt by some dreaded camera shake!) And I managed to navigate all the rapids without capsizing (others weren’t so lucky, although I must admit I came close!)”
Equipment: Phase One XF 100Mp Trichromatic Medium Format Camera + Schneider Kreuznach 35mm blue lens
2 frames stitched together to retain maximum detail & clarity
Exposure: 1/60 sec @ f11 ISO 800
Location: Whanganui River

And here it is, “Kaiwhakatere / The Navigator”

“I was camping above this beach in Abel Tasman National Park & had already settled into my sleeping bag, when the full moon’s luminance became so intense that it lit my tent like daylight! Moments later I was racing down the beach with my equipment to this remarkable rock stack. As the night deepened, the stars revealed their full brilliance, with the twin beacons Alpha Centauri & Beta Centauri (The Pointers) shining brightly in the night sky. Recording 20 second exposures over multiple images, I stitched four frames together across the horizon to retain maximum detail & clarity.

This print pays homage to Aotearoa’s Māori & European explorers who navigated vast oceans to reach these shores, guided only by the stars & their unwavering resolve. This sculpted sentinel stands with a spiritual presence, watching over this bay since the beginning of time. Harnessing nature’s elements culminated in this unique image, one that feels both ancient & enduring.”

“Dancing Mist” stretched canvas, 3m high x 1m wide that u installed for my clients Marcus & Naomi yesterday, it looks fantastic! This is just 1/4 of the entire image (scroll left to view the whole image as a triptych, also a timelapse of me stretching this big beast of a canvas yesterday morning!
To get such incredible detail I captured 4 frames high x 5 across the width & stitched these together into one remarkable file. More details & examples of this epic scene can be found on my website (enter Dancing Mist in the search bar). ☺️

“Levels Of Light” of Skippers Canyon near Queenstown makes a stunning statement in this lounge, thanks to Mike @ Art By The Sea Gallery in Takapuna who sold & installed it in our clients’ Auckland home.
Printed as a Fuji Flex print which is mounted behind non-reflective acrylic, the clarity & depth this displays is truly remarkable. But it’s all the more satisfying to see how perfectly it suits this room. ☺️

I'm in love with this 70's inspired retro lounge in my client's Christchurch home, where I delivered & hung "Sunshine And Sky Blue" this week. It's such a perfect fit for this fun space with the groovy wallpaper (on the left) & the blue light looks so good with it too! Scroll left for a closer view (I had to get up a ladder for extra height so I could catch Mt. Taranaki in the distance!)😊 #70's

“Jackpot” which I printed in a custom size for my client Stephen & delivered & hung in his beautiful Nelson home last year.
Stephen had recently returned home to NZ after many years abroad & some years ago he had purchased my piece ‘Crimson Window” triptych from Artport @ Auckland Airport (many of my clients will remember Artport I’m sure!) Stephen had carted my Crimson Window canvas around several countries & it now hangs proudly in the lounge next door to this Jackpot piece (& he loves it just as much as the day he bought it!)
Stephen contacted me as he had bought this home & the previous owners had this recess in the walk for a TV, so after careful measuring I sized the frame exactly to fit the space & it looks really cool. And so much nicer than staring at a black TV screen!!

“The Circle Of Life” which I delivered & hung for my clients Jonathan & LinLin in Christchurch, just before Christmas, it looks amazing in its new home!
Jonathan contacted me as they were unsure about what might suit their wall, but as soon as I saw the space (& their fabulous circular light), I knew this piece would be perfect. I actually had this piece hanging at Whitianga Art Gallery on the Coromandel, so on my roadtrip north in December I brought this piece all the way back south with me & it looks so good!
Swipe to see a shot from downstairs & the rock that this magical wave broke over (I captured this near the Kohaihai River, north of Karamea as the sunset was glowing intensely). Fantastic! 😊

It’s always a thrill to deliver & hang pieces for my clients, such as Leanne & Andrew in Christchurch who ordered their “Golden Highway” from the legendary Julia at Central Art in Queenstown (Julia kept her canvas hanging in her gallery & I printed a fresh piece for Leanne & Andrew). After some debate on where to hang it (above the TV - no!!) it complements their decor beautifully, perfect size & everything - love love love! 🥰 There’s not many of these left in its limited edition now either…
Swipe to see another larger example I delivered to clients in Auckland a few years ago & a large installation at I-Med Radiology in Tauranga (stitched together from 72 overlapping images, the detail is immense & allows it to be enlarged to huge sizes).
It’s always so gratifying to meet my clients & see the end result where my work ends up, gracing the walls of such a wide range of homes & businesses. ☺️
