Last night was our local camera club’s end of year Christmas dinner and final assessment/awards night. I was completely shocked when I heard my name called for the AC Davis Challenge Cup and Best Overall Image of the Year awards 🤯🫨

I spent hours editing this image. I initially printed my first edit and absolutely hated it and went back to it for hours until I got to this final image. The day these images were captured was especially memorable. As the tour van breached the cliff top, we were met with a terrible and unsettling sight. Deceased gannet chicks everywhere after a recent cold front had swept through. It was a harsh reality and one of the many challenges these incredible sea birds face. I wanted the final image to represent the dark side of nature and the harsh elements these birds live in.

It’s been an awesome year of birding and crazy/ busy year for life events. Cheers to 2026, I wish you all happiness, unique bird sightings 🦅, and success in your personal endeavors 🥂

New Zealand pipit | pīhoihoi

My first time seeing one and I wouldn’t have known about these little cuties if I hadn’t taken my ornithology course 🤩. I was really surprised at how unbothered this bird was by our presence.

For identification when comparing to a song thrush or a skylark, the striking black marking that extends from the beak, through and past the eye, is a good give away, along with that prominent white supercilium (eyebrow). The speckling on the chest does not extend all the way down as does the song thrush. They also bob their tails and have a long trailing back claw that leaves distinctive footprints 😄

On Saturday, my friend and I went to Bushy Park and it was pure magic 🤩

It was my first time seeing a Hihi/Stitchbird, we heard and saw countless Tīeke, had many close encounters with Toutouwai/North Island Robin, and to top the day off, we ended our visit with over 50 Kererū flying over us while walking through the wetland track (I was too mind blown during the initial fly over and missed snapping a shot of the huge mob😭 but that will forever be in my memory).

One of the biggest surprises of the day was hearing a kōkako, which literally stopped us in our tracks and sent us over the moon with excitement!

Our complete list of birds we both heard and saw:

Calls:
Shining cuckoo
Whitehead
Kokako
Sulfur crested cockatoo
Skylark
California quail
Frog 🐸

Seen:
Tīeke
Tūī
Kererū
Hihi
Grey warbler
Rifleman
Robin
Rosella
Magpie
Skink
Kingfisher
Blackbird
Myna
Chaffinch
Karearea
Bellbird
Fantail
Black backed gull
Starting

Sparrow

I captured this back in January but delayed posting until after my ornithology course as I am not well acquainted with seabirds (yet 😉). I can now confidently ID this beautiful bird as the Buller’s shearwater 🤓
