Shooting the breeze, while Gerry is shooting science.

The Malaghan Institute of Medical Research does amazing work in the fields of cancer, allergies, inflammatory and infectious diseases, and it is always a fascinating and very interesting experience taking photos of some of the country's best researchers and their work.

'The Malaghan Institute is New Zealand’s world-class independent biomedical research institute with a focus on breakthrough discoveries in immunology and immunotherapy.'

Contemplating printed copies of possible candidate photos for the Nikon NZIPP Iris Professional Photography Awards. We've been through this process a hundred times this past month or so, pouring over photos (digitally and printed), with wine, without wine, pulling them apart, putting them together, picking different photos, nitpicking, agonising, changing categories, and repeat all of the above Again. And again.

I love the process of getting 'involved' with a photo, and giving (hopefully) constructive criticism. I may well be Gerry's worst critic, yet staunchest supporter.

On a recent rainy morning, Gerry got to take photos for a Farmers Weekly article by Charlie Williamson, on the Feilding High School's agricultural activities. It was wet and muddy and just a little bit challenging to get the shots between showers.

Gumboots is as much part of a photographer's arsenal in NZ, as the right lens. Luckily Gerry had both.

Prime Minister’s Science Prizes 2/5

The Prime Minister’s Science Communication Prize went to Toby Morris for his illustrations conveying complex scientific concepts, and specifically his effective science communication on the COVID-19 pandemic to help New Zealanders understand the science behind it.

Toby also created cartoons of all the winners and Ministers, which were used as part of the visuals for the event. So talented.
