The rifleman is generally considered to be New Zealand’s smallest bird. It is one of only two surviving species within the ancient endemic New Zealand wren family. Riflemen are small forest-dwelling insectivores, and are constantly on the move, producing a characteristic β€˜wing-flicking’ while moving through the canopy and foraging up and down tree trunks.

Cane toads are an invasive species introduced to Australia in 1935 in an attempt to control the cane beetle population, which was damaging sugar cane crops. However, the toads quickly became a problem, as they are toxic to many native predators and have few natural predators in Australia.

The willie wagtail is much like an oversized, noisier, black-and-white version of the New Zealand fantail, to which it is closely related. The willie wagtail is a widespread and familiar bird in Australia. Like the fantail, the willie wagtail wags its tail from side-to-side, unlike the unrelated β€œtrue” wagtails, which bob their tails up-and-down.

The spotted s**g and closely related Pitt Island s**g are the only yellow-footed s**g species endemic to New Zealand.

Adult spotted s**gs in breeding plumage are elegant and colourful, sporting a Mohican-like double crest, bright green-blue facial skin and blue eye rings.

The species gets its name from the small black spots that appear near the tip of each back and wing covert feather during the breeding season.

Spotted s**gs are entirely marine, breeding on the coasts of the North, South and Stewart Islands, and feeding in waters out to 16 km.

The kea is an unusual parrot. It is often observed in alpine areas, and gained early notoriety among settler farmers for attacks on their sheep. Innately curious, kea are attracted to people wherever they enter its mountain domain, and are a feature at South Island ski-fields and mountain huts. Their attraction to people and their paraphernalia is a two-edged sword, providing both new threats and new opportunities.

The variable oystercatcher is a familiar stocky coastal bird with a long, bright orange bill, found around much of New Zealand. They are often seen in pairs probing busily for shellfish along beaches or in estuaries. Previously shot for food, variable oystercatchers probably reached low numbers before being protected in 1922, since when numbers have increased rapidly. They are long-lived, with some birds reaching 30+ years of age.

The pied stilt is a dainty wading bird with, as its name suggests, black-and-white coloration and very long legs. It is common at wetlands and coastal areas throughout New Zealand and may be seen feeding alongside oystercatchers.
