Rebekah's on the road again!! This time I'm doing a tribute show in Hunterville as part of The Hope Floats Tour.

This show, and my book , is dedicated to my late grandfather, Don Burgess, who died in 2023 (and I miss him all the time).
20% of proceeds sold goes to the Hunterville Fire Service with gratitude to them, and the rest of the community, who turned out to assist my grandfather the morning of his death. My grandfather had a long history with the fire service, having been a volunteer for the Halcombe Fire Service.

It would be amazing to have a turnout that would honour that service.

No AI here.

Way too many photos of me on [Instagram] now, so here are a couple of snaps from my "brave" appearance at the Paekakariki Markets yesterday....

Got a few claps - but a tough crowd. Ah well - onwards and upwards eh!!

My three highlights of yesterday:

1) Doing an impromptu few sets with amazing local pianist Jack - was a good mix to do poetry with piano. A first for me!! Super grateful to Jack for this. πŸŽ‰

2) Seeing the engagement from the children, who would peer at me as they walked past wondering what on earth I was doing (I've asked myself the same question)! πŸ”₯ Hopefully I've inspired a few future writers!

3) Staying behind to watch the ukelele band after - the band name escapes me, but what a vibe! Had to control myself to stop from dancing with me little girl in the street! ❀️ Great group of passionate musos!!

Thanks, people of Paekakariki! Will see you again.

Having just seen the Michael Jackson biopic I am reminded how he was my biggest and most authentic influence. Not Bob Dylan, not Joan Baez, not Elvis, not even Leonard Cohen - Michael Jackson. May he rest in peace knowing the impact he made.

I was a child of the 80s and his song Keep the Faith literally saved my life as a suicidal teen. This was my anthem. Over and over again I used to sing this. And it was around those days I started writing poetry - 30 years ago!! But got time and time again told my poetry wasn't enough to make it in the literary world.

If only I had the confidence I needed then to do what I'm doing now. Nearly 50 and I'm only now starting to live and realise my life dreams and purpose. And it's not getting any easier....

Onwards and upwards for Rebekah 'the solo show'. No one knows how hard I've fought to get this far. May these doors start opening for me now. πŸ™πŸ’ͺI am enough.

**Good evening, followers!

Exciting news!! Last year I got some funding to run some poetry in preschools this year.

For new followers: I am a Porirua-based poet and I am launching a poetry-in-preschools pilot project modelled on the Poetry in Schools roadshow that was run 'back in the day' by Sam Hunt and Gary McCormick.

I'm aiming to inspire a love of literacy at an early age. πŸ’•

I have already got one preschool on board and am looking for two more Porirua preschools that would benefit from this project. I'd start with a short poetry presentation and end with an interactive session with children making poems on the ground. This second session may be suitable for children aged between four and five, and your early reader children, however, children of all ages should enjoy the initial performance session.

I am running this pilot with the support of and via the Creative New Zealand's Creative Communities Scheme, with so many thanks. πŸ™

Please message me directly if this is something your preschool in Porirua might be interested in and what work you are already doing to support literacy. I'd need some teacher support to run this, but would manage all the required resources myself.

If you're a teacher, you will have run this past your centre managers first, please.

πŸ™πŸ’–β€” feeling blessed.
