"Hidden Gem Of The Month: Icarus Institute"

If you are looking for a garage that can modify your car to something like the one from the mid-20th Century from Mother Earth, you don't need to seek any further. Icarus Institute will make your dream come true.

It's in the little village of Jokistan in N'Ark. Yes, a very distant tiny planet in the middle of nowhere, N'Ark. Yes, the access is bad, very hard to get there, and not a tourists’ destination. But trust me, it's worth it. Regarding the mid-20th Century aesthetics, Broderique Wroxx, Naomi Wroxx and Daedalus mk4 from Icarus Institute are the best, as most other historic car garages are specialized in 28th – 32nd Century styles.

When I visited, Naomi and Daedalus were in the home stretch of a big job, modifying a Matz Volcano (3520AD model) to a replica of Hino Contessa 900 Sprint (1961AD model) with 2 V-twin tachyon-steam engines, and 2 main rotors with 4 sub-rotors (built inside wheels). I’ve been a reporter for many decades, but have never seen such beautiful craft work before. I will tell you again, trust me, it’s worth visiting N’Ark.

Wish me a luck!

Oh, almost forgot!
There are tons of Easter Eggs in this picture.
Lots of stuff from various movies, and my artworks from the past.
How many can you spot?

Done!
I have just submitted the final render to for

As I can't post it here yet until they publish my work on their official website, here is a behind-the-scene render.

This is a part of the scene but from a completely different camera angle from the one in the final render.
I like those computer and telephone but it won't be clearly visible in the complete image.

This video is really interesting.

As you know, I love paper nautili a lot.
But I don't use Golden Ratio/ Fibonacci Spiral as a guide when creating art pieces.
Hard to explain, but Golden Ratio doesn't give me my desired results.
This video kinda translated what I've been feeling but I couldn't explain well.

WIP-04

So, I changed the composition.
High angle shows the hero asset Hino Contessa more clearly.

I created and added even more little assets like a door, a boiler, a computer, a telephone, a steampunk guitar, a workbench with lots of stuff on it, etc.
I like the computer and the phone (at the left bottom corner).

Now, it's gonna be the final part, tweaking the lights and camera angle and colours and layouts, etc, which is the most time consuming part.

WIP-03

Maybe I was doing wrong for the last 2 weeks.

I created the workshop, placed some other vehicles, added some steampunkish details to Hino Contessa 900 Sprint like steam engine s and rotors, and of course Naomi Wroxx and Daedalus mk4.

And this is the layout/composition as of yesterday.

But!
I realized this is for from .
It's not my usual Icarus Institute Series artpiece.
Hence, the focal point shouldn't be Naomi and Daedalus, but it must be Hino Contessa!

I have to completely change the layout/composition.

But before doing the drastic change, I just post this 'early wrong version' here.

WIP-02
(I didn't post WIP-01 here on Facebook, but did it just on Instagram in order to get this 3D model, which was the rule of this competition)

I've received a 3D model of Hino Contessa 900 Sprint 1961 for from .
Thanks!

This Sprint version is outstanding, what a beaut!
It was a concept design and didn't end up mass production unfortunately.
So nobody saw this car on the road.
Such a shame.
But I reckon it's one of the most beautiful cars in the entire car design history.

I set up a basic garage scene yesterday.
And I moved the driver's seat of this car to the right.
Apparently the concept model had it on the left, but it's a Japanese car and I am Japanese, so why not?
I don't wanna make a car with a steering wheel on the left, that's weird!

Well, I am gonna cut open its bonnet and put a steam engine in there, which would be my job for today, apparently.

[[ Space Scene Study - Blender ]]

A long time ago, I used to practice to create this kind of images in Photoshop.
But this is 3D CG.
I followed a mini course by CG Cookie.

I was quite tired from learning geometry node intensively these days, and this nice and quick little project was really refreshing.

I might make a 5-second short with a spaceship or two.
I was dreaming about working for ILM and making VFX for Star Wars when I was very young, so why not?🤣

Project 4 (Blender Course by Yu-Ren Tseng)

I have been bouncing around between lots of different tutorials recently, along with several different projects of my own.
I lost the count how many projects and tutorials that I am tackling at the moment.b

Anyway.
Yu-Ren Tseng's art style is very stylized and cute.
So, it might look pretty easy.
No.
He tends to animate most stuff in the scene with uses lots of geometry node and shader node.
I think I am quite OK about procedural shader nodes but his tutorials are full of surprises.

In this scene, only robot is animated with keyframes.
River flow is UV scroll (shader node), and splash, rocks and grass are geometry node based.

[[ Icarus Institute - Steamono ]]

I've been working on this mono wheel "Steamono" for quite a while.
It's for a short film in which Naomi And Daedalus drive it in high speed.
But I haven't figured out how to animate it yet.

I made this garage scene last week following a tutorial from CG Cookie and decided to use it as a stage for Steamono.
My animation will be more stylized since my PC isn't powerful enough, but it's very nice to see this kind of photorealistic rendering.
