Every June without fail I seem to end up in this remote corner of South Dakota. It’s an area that few people visit, but it’s one of my favorites. It had been a frustrating day of storm chasing. Either the predicted storms failed to materialize or when they did they would immediately die out. This thunderstorm was dying as well and by the time I reached it there wasn’t even any lightning left. But with clear skies to the west I knew that an amazing light show was coming. Though I couldn’t have predicted that the rainbow would form directly over Battleship Rock. This was the same landmark where I captured rare red sprites last year. The right side of the vivid rainbow faded quickly but the left side stuck around for quite awhile. Though the prairie wasn’t as green as past years, the wet grass and golden sunlight made it hard to tell.
