Scenes from Mueller Hut 💫

We recently got back from a couple of days in Aoraki National Park and lucked out with some beautiful weather!

This is Mueller Hut - one of the most iconic backcountry mountain huts in New Zealand. Like many of the huts here, you can stay in this one overnight, but sadly for us the summer has been booked out nearly every night. A clear sunset and sunrise up here would be incredible with glaciers and peaks in every direction. Next time!

A few days on the Routeburn Track 🌿

It’s not often that I get to the end of a backpacking trip and wish it were longer, but this was one of those trails. It was cold and wet and windy at times (very on brand for New Zealand), but just stunning the whole way through. I lost track of how many times I looked up from my feet and said “wow” involuntarily. We don’t usually hike point to point trails, so it was a nice treat to have new terrain each day. Now I want to hike all of NZ’s Great Walks!

A few favorites from previous winters ❄️

While I’m certainly not mad about skipping out on a proper winter this year in the southern hemisphere, looking back on these photos reminds me of how magical winter can be, especially in the mountains. These photos are all from various spots in Washington and Alaska!

A sunset drive through Fiordland 🌈

Fiordland National Park is one of the few places in the world where you actually hope for rain. The mountains around you turn into steep walls of waterfalls all around you. When we were planning our first trip here recently and saw a mostly sunny forecast, we almost reconsidered. I’m so glad we didn’t! This place is unreal and worth visiting in any kind of weather.

Scenes from a moody weekend on the South Island 🌧️

We’ve been having what we’re told is an unusually wet and chilly summer here in New Zealand. I honestly don’t mind a gloomy day - the greens appear greener, the waterfalls are more full, and everything looks a little more alive.

Warmer, sunnier days are in the forecast though, and I’m definitely looking forward to swimming more comfortably in the beautiful lakes we have nearby!
