On the road before 5am, chasing a wedding story all the way to Hobbiton.
There’s something about leaving Whangārei Heads in the dark that feels like stepping into another world. The air was still warm — that classic winterless‑north softness, and I watched the temperature gauge like a little travel diary as I headed south. 14… 12… 9… and then, somewhere near Matamata, it dropped all the way to 0 degrees.
From balmy to bone‑cold in a single road trip. Only in New Zealand.
Rolling into Hobbiton on Matariki weekend was like arriving at a festival. The movie set was buzzing, buses, visitors, staff everywhere, all that green, rolling landscape alive with people. And in the middle of it all, this beautiful wedding.
Magic layered on magic.

The day itself was a delight. Crisp air, golden pockets of light, the hum of people exploring the Shire while we tucked into our own little story.
After the final hugs and goodbyes, I hit the road again — this time not home, but to stay with friends. And honestly? I was treated like a queen. Warm house, warm food, warm company, the kind of hospitality that makes you exhale. I even got to catch up with my son, which was the perfect end to a huge day.

The next morning, I looked outside and stopped.
“What on earth is that white stuff on the car…?”
Frost. Actual frost. I had to laugh.

Then back on the road north, watching the temperature climb from 0 degrees to 17 degrees as I crossed the Auckland Harbour Bridge. The sky opened up, the air softened, and by the time I was heading up the Brynderwyns, I could feel home pulling me in.

And then that moment cresting the Brynderwyns and seeing Whangārei Heads, the sea stretching out, familiar and blue and beautiful.
Nearly home.
What a journey. What a wedding. What a weekend.
huge thanks to the team Movie Set

Funny how we’ll sprint for sunrise and golden hour,
yet barely glance outside when a storm is building.
But those moody skies?
They’re some of the best theatre nature ever puts on. Ocean Beach in Whangarei Heads, today as the rain approached...

Feels a bit like cheating… standing on the deck at dawn, coffee in hand, still wrapped in my dressing gown, looking out across McLeod Bay toward The Nook and thinking, a long lens would nail that shot from right here...... And it did !

Before heading out for drinks and nibbles with the neighbours, this magic happened, captured right from the deck at the front of the house..... Just pure magic !!

Facebook is nagging me and said, “You haven’t posted in a while.”
Alright then — here’s Dawn at Ocean Beach, Whangārei Heads... Happy now ..... I know I am.... I can still feel the sea spray on my face and the warmth of the sun on my skin, and the roar of the ocean....

I was meant to be out doing real estate photos yesterday evening…
But the sea had other plans.

The sun hit the water just right, the tide was rolling in with that slow, hypnotic pull, and suddenly I was standing there like a moth to a flame — completely captured by the light instead of capturing the house I was supposed to be shooting.

So then I had to peel myself away from the coastline, sand still on my shoes, and head back to photograph the property like a responsible adult.

Northland, you win every time.... Look how fast that light changed on the water..... nothing like a bit if ICM photography on the sea !

“You lookin’ at me?
Thought you could sneak a picture, huh?
Nobody snaps the Bird Boss without permission.
Now hand over the crumbs and we’ll forget this happened.”

Last night’s McLeod Bay sunset had that Marlborough Sounds magic — soft folds of hills, glassy water, and a sky that looked like it exhaled. Northland pretending to be the South, and absolutely nailing it.
