Before the landscapes, there were crime scenes.
I spent years as a forensic photographer with the NZ Police. Nine of us, covering Auckland. If you can imagine it, I likely photographed it.
It was the most demanding photographic education I could have received - and I didn't know it at the time.
Film, not digital. One chance, every single time, to capture everything. No checking the back of the camera. You just had to know.
That training never leaves you.
The subjects are different now. The stillness is different. But the eye is the same eye.

Some mornings you just have to get up before the world does.
The sky was doing that thing - where the colours are almost too good to be real. Deep blue bleeding into pink, orange burning at the horizon. And the viewing platform just standing there, perfectly still, perfectly placed.
This is what happens when you chase the dawn. What's the last thing that got you out of bed early?

What would YOU keep?

And then she walked in. Surveyed the entire chaos. And sat down.

I didn't plan to fall in love with ICM photography. It happened by accident, the camera moved at exactly the wrong moment and produced exactly the right image.
That one frame changed the direction of my fine art work completely.
