Berry season is one of my favorite times of year in the high country

Helping yourself to a buffet of wild mountain huckleberries while taking in views like these feels like a dream

I don’t need to wait until I die to experience heaven, I just need to climb a few thousand feet into these mountains during berry season

Can’t beat a sunset in the high country

The last few hours of light are a magical time up high in the Olympics

Light and shadow dance across the landscape, changing shape and color with each step down the trail

I rarely plan my shots, opting for a run-and-gun style that is more like jazz than classical: shoot where the light and landscape combine in just the right way to create a frame that makes me feel a special kind of something

This is where I feel most alive, like I’m taking part in that dance

I’m less focused on camera settings and capturing technically correct exposures than I am on taking in the scene in an open mindset, listening to what is speaking to me in the moment, feeling that “feeling”, and reacting intuitively

It’s both yin and yang: open receiving followed by intuitive action

Feeling the pulse and moving accordingly

Riding the wave

A meditative yoga that’s good practice for the rest of life

I’m real grateful for nights like these

The Olympic high country is medicine for the soul

Alpine meadows alive with wildflowers dancing under snow-capped peaks, fragile and cosmically beautiful, make me feel what I can only describe as childlike wonder

I’m so grateful to be alive while we still have pristine, untouched wilderness to explore and marinate in. I’m not sure future generations will be so lucky.

Some go to the mountains to escape “real life”

For me, Real Life only exists far from cars and strip malls and concrete buildings with right angles.

Not an escape, but a head-first immersion into the realest life that one can hope to experience.

What’s real about industrial processed food? What’s real about sitting at a desk and communicating via Slack? What’s real about AI generated approximations of the human condition?

The shape that a glacier carves into the bedrock of this planet is real. Filtering all of your water from an alpine stream is real. The mountains, the plants, and the symphony of rivers and birds and wind, all real.

The further we get down this road of industrial, technical, “progress”, the further we get from the real.

We trade mountain views for screensavers, communion with the birds for communication with AI chatbots, and experiencing life firsthand for living vicariously through pictures on a website.

Nature doesn’t lie. Nature doesn’t exploit. Nature shows us the way to the truth.

What’s real to you?

Spent a few days on the wild coast with some good company

Lost my voice but it didn’t matter

The ocean and the birds and the sun did plenty of singing anyway

Oh, they tell me of of an cloudy day
