A personal note from my fellow sternman and best friend, Christian -

In the spring of 2014, at the age of 14, I wrote a letter to Donny asking him to consider hiring Nils and me as co-sternmen. I made a lot of promises in that letter: to try our hardest even if we weren’t strong yet, to never be late, and to not talk to Nils too much while on the job. Donny accepted the offer and our journey started.

Little did we know that our scheme to work together would turn into a four-summer commitment to hauling for a legendary lobsterman. From the start, our time with Donny was far more than a job. He was, of course, our boss. But with each 5AM start, each trap baited and hauled, each story shared, each lesson learned, our relationship grew as he became the type of mentor you read about or see in a movie with all the moments of humor, joy and occasional tension you would expect. And so the time passed, and our friendship deepened into more than we could have ever hoped. We grew to care for and respect him as our captain and love him as a grandfather.

The Exhibit:
We hope the photographs in this exhibit will give you a feel for what a privilege it has been to work for and with Donald MacVane. Donny has been captain to dozens of sternman, including some of the most successful lobstermen fishing in Casco Bay today. One of the Donny’s most striking traits is his independent spirit and we hope these images and anecdotes capture this accurately and respectfully. What is ironic is that although our elders generally become more dependent over time, Donny captained the “Carol” with a confident independence that inspired us. Sure, on occasion we may have been Donny’s ‘eyes’ and provided some youthful muscle for heavy lifting. Donny, however, showed us that independence is not tied to age but rather to integrity, strength of character, generosity, intelligence, and experience -- all traits that Donny displays with humility and warmth each day on the water.

While watching the sunset at Wharariki beach, I met a French photographer, Clement, who had a van with an extra seat. A month later we met up at the Pak'nSave grocery store outside of Christchurch to spend the next week exploring together. The destination of choice was a mountain pass, Arthurs Pass, and the autumn weather was just above freezing with a persistent rain. One morning, while I was drying out my gear soaked by the sustained downpours the night before, Clement fitted his van, named jungle, with animal print tapestries. After our quiet mornings sipping tea, we would let our sense of creativity and curiosity guide us along rivers and up steep valleys.
Our first night together I set up my tent, using the van as a windbreak, while Clement started on dinner. Jumping into the into the van to escape the cutting wind felt like i'd been thrown into a dream. What used to be a bed in the back of the van was now magically transformed into a small table with benches generously cushioned by quilts. Warm candlelight danced to Eddie Vedder's song, End of the Road, as we waited for the water to boil.

I have an intense passion for getting out and exploring or engaging in outdoor activities such as backpacking, rock climbing, and skiing. I want to share this passion through my photography in the hope to inspire others to get out and explore.

This self portrait was taken during my last week in New Zealand. I remember waking up after a cold rainy night and not really wanting to get out of my cozy tent. While driving up from the beach I slept next to, I had to drive with my head out the window of the car due to the foggy windows, my fleece sleeves pulled over my hands. Thankfully I did get up and out as watching this sunrise is something I will not soon forget.
