How many photos do you have of yourself with your kids?

Not ones you took. Not the ones where your arm is stretched out holding the phone. Actually in them, with them, fully present in the frame.

For most mums the answer is not many. Because you're the one behind the camera. You're the one making sure everyone else is captured - the milestones, the silly moments, the ordinary Tuesdays that somehow become the ones you remember most.

But you're part of this family too. And one day your kids are going to want to look back and see you there.

Not the perfect version of you. Not a posed studio shot. Just you, with them, exactly as you are right now.

That's what a family session gives you. Photos that put you back in the picture - literally.

If you've been meaning to book one, this is your nudge. I'd love to hear from you.

What actually happens at a newborn session - because I get asked this a lot.

First thing to know: there's no rush. A newborn session typically takes two to four hours and that's completely normal. We're working around a tiny human who has their own agenda and we respect that entirely.

Here's roughly how it goes:

We always start with the family photos first. You've just had a baby, you've made an effort to get everyone ready and out the door, and mum's makeup is fresh. That's the best time to get everyone together - before the studio warms up, before the feeds, before the chaos of the day catches up with you.

Then we move into sibling shots while big brother or sister is still keen and cooperative. These are some of my favourite images to capture - that first look between siblings is something really special.

Then we settle into the newborn poses. By this point baby has usually had a feed and is in that gorgeous deep sleepy state - perfect for the curled up wraps, the basket shots, all those classic newborn details that are only possible in those first couple of weeks.

In between there will be feeds, nappy changes, settling time. All completely normal and all part of the session. You don't need to apologise for any of it.

The one thing I always tell parents beforehand: don't stress about baby performing. They just need to be exactly who they are. That's more than enough.

If you're expecting and want to know more about booking a newborn session, I'd love to hear from you. I can only take on a limited number of sessions a month to allow time for rescheduling when babies arrive late, so you're best to get in touch when you're pregnant. Send me a DM, let's chat.

There's something that happens when someone sees their branding photos for the first time.

Not just "oh these are nice" - but a genuine moment of recognition. That's actually me. That's what I look like when I'm in my element. That's the version of myself I want people to see.

It's one of my favourite parts of this job.

A personal branding shoot isn't just about having good photos. It's about having images that actually represent the business you've built - that work on your website, your LinkedIn, your Instagram, your email newsletters - without you having to dig out the same tired headshot every single time.

I'm taking enquiries for June and July now. If you've been thinking about it, even just at the back of your mind - now's a good time to get in touch. No pressure, just a conversation about what you need and whether we'd be a good fit.

I went to a social media talk the other week and came home with one sentence stuck in my head.

You don't need to create content. You just need to document what you're already doing.

I've been in this industry for nearly 18 years. I spend my days behind a camera capturing other people's stories - the behind the scenes of their businesses, the real moments, the details that make them who they are. And I came home from that talk and realised I'm not doing nearly enough of that for myself.

The setup before a shoot. The drive to a location because the light looks incredible and you can't not stop. The moment a client sees their photos for the first time. It's all already there. I just haven't been picking up my phone and capturing it.

And if I'm honest about it - if I needed that reminder after 18 years of doing this, I'd be willing to bet some of you do too.

You don't need the perfect idea or the inspired caption or the right moment. The content is already happening all around you. You just need to document it.

Start there. The rest follows.

That smile. And the truck that absolutely had to come along for the shoot - obviously.

Every child is different. Some warm up in two minutes, some need twenty. Some want to run, some want to hold their favourite thing and just be. My job is to follow their lead, work at their pace, and find the moment when they forget I'm even there.

This right here is that moment.

Every child deserves to have their picture taken in a way that feels good for them. No pressure, no "look at the camera and smile", no rushing. Just them, exactly as they are.

Got questions about what a session looks like? Send me a message - I'm happy to chat it through.

A little update on something I've been building.

The Content Design Club is launching very soon - and before it opens to the public I wanted to share the details with the people who matter most first.

Here's how it works:

If you've had a personal branding shoot with me in the last two years, you're getting two months completely free. After that you'll be locked in at the founding member rate of $25 a month - that's the price you keep for as long as you stay. No increases, no surprises.

If you're not a past client but you've been following along and you want in early - founding member spots are open now at $25 a month. When we open to the public that price goes to $49.

There are 50 founding member spots in total across both groups, so it's not unlimited.

What's inside when you join:

Two short tutorials a month - around 10-15 minutes each, practical and straight to the point. A Canva template and a content prompt pack every month so you can put what you've learned straight into practice. Fortnightly drop in Zoom sessions where you can jump on, get unstuck, ask questions and get back to your day. And a community of other business owners working through the same things alongside you.

The waitlist is open now at www.accentphotography.co.nz/content-design-club - or if you're a past client and want to know more about your free months, just send me a message.

Those tiny hands though. 🤍

Honestly one of my favourite things about newborn sessions is the details. The little fists, the curled up toes, the way they just fit perfectly into everything around them.

They change so fast. These early days are worth capturing.

If you're expecting and would love to chat about a newborn session, I'd love to hear from you.

There's a pattern that happens when economies get tough.

Things go quiet, money feels tight, and businesses start pulling back. They go quiet on socials, stop showing up, and tell themselves they'll come back when things improve.

I've watched it happen more than once in nearly 18 years of running this business. And the ones that disappear during the hard times are usually the ones that don't come back. Not because the economy finished them - but because people forgot about them.

The businesses that come out the other side are the ones that kept showing up. Consistently. Even when it felt pointless. Even when nobody seemed to be watching.

I feel the current climate as much as anyone. Enquiries are taking longer, people are thinking twice before they spend. But I also know from experience that visibility isn't a luxury you earn when things are good. It's the thing that keeps you in the game when they're not.

If you've been putting it off because now doesn't feel like the right time - that's exactly why it is.

Every family I photograph has at least one parent who apologises in advance for their kids.

"They won't sit still." "They'll be a nightmare." "I'm sorry if they don't cooperate."

And every single time I think - good. That's exactly what I'm here for.

The photos that make parents laugh when they see them back are never the ones where everyone is lined up looking at the camera. They're the ones like this. Dad swinging the kids so high they can barely breathe from laughing. Nobody performing for the camera. Just exactly who they are.

That's the one you point at and say "yep, that's my kid."

A family session doesn't have to feel like hard work for anyone - especially not the kids. When they're having fun, everyone relaxes, and that's when the real photos happen.

Your kids don't need to sit still. They just need to be themselves and I'll take care of the rest.

If you'd love to capture your family exactly as you are right now, I'd love to hear from you.
