Carterton

Last weekend I spent some time at Wai Art No. 23 Gallery in Carterton, learning the ropes of how the gallery runs. Such a lovely creative space filled with inspiring work from local artists.

While I was there, I also gave my art panel a little refresh, adding in some new pieces. It’s always nice to see the wall take on new energy with a few fresh works in the mix.

If you’re in Carterton, pop in for a browse — there’s always something new to discover at No. 23!

Higjly recommend... let's support out local literary....

Arapū Toi is a taoanga (precious thing) for children from early childhood to primary level. Featuring poems and illustrations for each letter of the Maori alphabet, it also includes a wall frieze.

The beautiful artwork is by Kapiti coast artist Austin Whincup with poems by Wellington storyteller and writer Moira Wairama.

Moira Wairama is a storyteller and writer from Te Whanga-nui-ā –Tara. She has won a number of awards for her children’s picture books and also writes for theatre and radio.

I am now working at Art Works Framers in Wellington. I’m very happy here, the bosses are awesome and provide well above the living wage. They do really innovative, top-quality work. The staff are all artists and creatives.

I work at their Marsden Village Karori premises on Fridays and Saturdays until 3pm and at their Kingsford Smith, Lyall Bay premises on Sunday from 11-4pm. I’m really enjoying working with a great crew. I’m lucky enough that some old patrons have discovered me here and it would be good to see some familiar faces again, so now you know where I am!

Hutt Art Centre

Kicking us off for the 2025 spotlights is the Hutt Art Society, which has been at the heart of the local creative community for over 60 years!
Based on the corner of Myrtle and Huia Streets in Lower Hutt, this vibrant incorporated society provides a welcoming space for artists to meet, create, and exhibit their work.
Members can join any of the many groups that meet regularly - from painting and printmaking to pottery, embroidery, and weaving - either working independently or with a tutor.
Hutt Art also runs the Odlin Gallery and Huia Gallery, which showcase new exhibitions every fortnight.
During the 2025 Art Trail, visitors can explore both galleries and several open workrooms!

We HIGHLY recommend checking out this local treasure; many of the artists on the trail have been involved with the Hutt Art Society in many different ways, and it's a huge cornerstone and champion of the creative energy and talent in the Hutt!

Slight spoiler alert, it'll also host STOP TWO. Twofer!
