What is ISO?
ISO stands for the International Standards Organization and it is the standardized industry scale for measuring sensitivity to light. So you say “WHAT DOES THAT MEAN???” In plain English, ISO is the amount of noise, or graininess, that you will allow in your photo in a trade-off for proper exposure.
Lower ISO should be used in brighter conditions and higher ISO should be used in low light conditions. Here is a scale to give you a good idea of what settings to use.

Matariki is a star cluster that appears in the early morning sky in New Zealand during the mid-winter months.

Mātauranga Māori (ancestral knowledge and wisdom) is at the heart of celebrations of the Matariki holiday and it will be a time for:
- Remembrance: Honouring those we have lost since the last rising of Matariki
- Celebrating the present: Gathering together to give thanks for what we have
- Looking to the future: Looking forward to the promise of a new year.

We want all photographers to know their cameras and use them the best they can, so today we’re going to talk about one of the basics of photography: "EXPOSURE" and understanding what it is and how it works is one of the first step in your digital photography journey. The exposure of a photo determines how light or how dark the photo will be; you can control this with 3 main settings in your camera: shutter speed (controls how long the sensor is going to be exposed to light), aperture (controls how much light is entering the camera by opening or closing the lens), and ISO (controls how sensitive the camera is to light), and the three of them together are known as the exposure triangle.
Basically, the exposure of a photograph is the amount of light in the photo: it determines how light or how dark the picture is; so photos can be:
- Underexposed: the photo is too dark, and you lose details in the shadows
- Overexposed : the photo is too bright, and you lose details in the highlights
- Correctly exposed : the photo was taken using the full dynamic range of the camera, and you have good details in both highlights and shadows.
