Matariki is a special time to reflect on those who have passed, celebrate the present, and plan for the future. In the midst of busy lives, it’s also a chance to slow down, reconnect, and simply pause.

Perched high above Tora beach, facing east, The Last Resort is perfectly positioned to watch the Matariki star cluster rise just before the morning sun — and we feel incredibly lucky to share it.

To celebrate Matariki, we’re offering 25% off our standard rates throughout July. If you’d rather skip the walk in, we’ll transfer you in our CanAm vehicles free of charge (usually $50pp!).*

Stay for 1 or 2 nights and enjoy:

🌟Gorgeous walk/bike/horse trek through farmland and native bush
🌟Fully equipped kitchen
🌟Food & luggage transfers
🌟Large dining room with cosy wood burner
🌟Comfy bedrooms sleeping up to 8 & modern bathrooms
🌟Hot showers & power
🌟Outdoor hot tub under the stars
🐾Behaved dogs welcome

Watch Matariki rise from our hilltop seat with a cup of tea, soak in the hot tub beneath the stars, or simply open the shutters from bed and take it all in. Listen to the sounds of the local nocturnal wildlife as the Māori New Year begins.

If you’ve not seen Matariki before, Te Papa has a wonderful guide on how to find the star cluster, you can also learn more at www.matariki.com

*25% off standard rates, and free transfer on our CanAm apply for bookings for the month of July 2026 only. For full Terms & Conditions visit our website.

A huge thank you to for this stunning photo of the night sky from The Last Resort, now that's special!

Visiting Kerosene Creek during the early afternoon on a Saturday on our field trip with Photographic Society of New Zealand for the National Convention was a challenge! The swim spots were busy, there were many unwanted ‘models’ to contend with… and I actually just wished I’d packed my togs and gone for a swim instead. In addition, I’d left my step down ring for my filter set (a small but vital piece!) in my jacket pocket back at the hotel.

This was the only semi-decent shot I managed in the 90-minutes here. This one involved holding the polariser in front of the lens and editing out a man who stayed in for far longer than health warnings would advise 😆

p.s I might add, we were there setting up BEFORE the man decided he wanted to swim infront of us, not weirdly intruding on his swim spot.

The windows walk was our third adventure on the B&W workshop with and these are the old gold mining tunnels and railway carts. I’m gutted I didn’t realise there were glow worms - a trip back at night would’ve been fun too!

A few faves from Victoria Battery.

Victoria Battery was the largest quartz crushing plant for gold extraction in Australasia. An interesting spot for capturing shapes, textures and shadows in B&W!

Karangahake gorge workshop with and

Day 1 - after arriving and settling into our accommodation in Paeroa, we headed out to Karangahake gorge for the first time. Planning to walk the loop track, we ended up spending a few hours wandering alongside the river (due to slips and rumours the full track was closed).

We then went back for our first of many editing sessions, followed by a late group dinner at the local Indian restaurant (which was possibly the best Indian I’ve eaten?! Can recommend the kadai lamb and cheesy garlic naan).

Here are my fave images from our first outing!
