It's the last few days of World Press Photo and the cluster of exhibitions which make up Photography by Woolf's 90th Anniversary Exhibition

Already over 7000 people have attended. It's unfortunately a wet weekend so a visit to Tàkina( opposite Te Papa) would be great to fill in a couple of hours.

The work on the walls represent over 50 Wellington Photographers, and a range of works from the beautiful to those photos which are more confronting. The Photojournalistic Documentary offering is world class including the work exhibited by The Post Photography Team.

Cutting edge photography by two expat Wellingtonians multiple British Press Award Winner Simon Townsley and Pulitzer/Picture of the Year multiple winner Melanie Burford also have current and compelling work on display.

The Photographic Society of New Zealand (PSNZ) The Nature Photography Society of NZ , The Whanganui Salon of Photography and The Wellington Photographic Society all have exhibits too.

Highlights also include works by three of our country's great senior Photojournalists, Peter Bush( Courtesy of Te Manawa Gallery and Museum) Barry Durrant and Graham Stewart. The history recorded by all three photographers would be unparalleled. Many of the photos are instantly recognisable!
.. and if that's not enough Te Papa have contributed a wonderful selection of work from their Spencer Digby Ronald Woolf Collection.

You will also see photography of our region like you have never seen before!

So head along to Tàkina and take in what is a remarkable array of amazing photography. The exhibition is open 10.00am -5.00pm today and tomorrow.

I'm often asked, " What's the best photo you have ever taken of Wellington?" Well, this photo would come close.

Titled Romantic Wellington the image was taken around 1991 and sold well in our Lambton Quay Gallery, in a variety of sizes and presentations.

It was inspired by my father who generally didn't take his photos of Wellington from Mt Victoria from the easiest or most popular points! Usually at the very least a fence to climb!

The Late Ian Wells, who was General Manager of Wellington Newspapers, and was possibly the best Sports Administrator I have come across, rang me in the early 1990s asking if they could purchase, and then we place big images of Wellington around the Evening Post and Dominion Newspaper Offices. It was a huge honour to asked, as Wellington Newspapers had a team of very talented media Photographers at that time. Ian explained that the management wished to have our photography, and it needed to be big! Ian was also a really amazing mentor to me both before and after my father's accident in 1987. It is something I'll always be appreciative and grateful for.

At the time we were shooting with medium format film, while the news media were using 35mm. It gave us quite an advantage when size was necessary. Remember we are in the early 90's pre digital!

This photo when printed the largest we had printed, and well above the 40x60 inches which we usually thought of as being large!

It was great coming across the photo today, while retrieving images from our archive for our 90th Anniversary Exhibition at Takina in September.

I thought Romantic Wellington should be shared again, after more than 30 years, and hasn't Wellington changed?
