About Wires
This project will be a collaboration between four Sydney based musicians (Briana Cowlishaw, Gavin Ahearn, Jonathan Zwartz and Nic Cecire), a Sydney based videographer/visual designer (Aymeric De Meautis) and a Singapore based Photographer (CHIA Ming Chien). Our working method
The overarching motif of the project is to explore the complex interaction between the Australian and Asian w
orldviews and perspectives. Wires seeks to unravel this interaction through an exposition of both the conflicts and congruities inherent in visual vs musical expression. The interaction between visual and aural will occur via two modes: 1. The presentation will initially look from the perspective of the visual artists as they interpret live music. The ‘Briana Cowlishaw Quartet’ will perform original repertoire from Briana Cowlishaw's new album release 'Paper Mache City' while photographer ‘Chia Ming Chien’ (Ming) and multimedia artist Aymeric De Meautis simultaneously present the audience with a visual interpretation inspired by Briana's original music. This interpretation will take Ming’s photography as a base, which will be manipulated live via projection by De Meautis. 2. The perspective will then shift, with the the quartet performing an improvised piece of music in reaction to a projected linear visual work by Ming Chien/De Meautis. Each performance will be unique and focus on a different theme of Ming’s work such as his ‘Wires’ series or ‘Kopi Tiams’ series which features the street life of Singapore. Ming and Aymeric will collaborate together to create this series of video installations. Expansion
This project was conceived as being wholly symbiotic, focusing on truly interactive live performances that encourage both the visual artists and musicians to react and improvise. We envision that the interdependent nature of this collaboration will present a unique perspective on the fluidity between differing mechanisms of artistic expression and ultimately will place an emphasis on the potential for cross-cultural fluidity. Briana Cowlishaw is a prolific young songwriter and vocalist from Sydney, Australia, her quartet features some of Australia's finest improvising instrumentalists; Jonathan Zwartz (Bass), Nic Cecire (Drums) and Gavin Ahearn (Piano). CHIA Ming Chien has worked in the communications industry for over 20 years as a Photographer, Editor, Copywriter and Journalist specialising in documentary, fine-art and architectural photography. Aymeric De Meautis is one of the creative directors of JokerTheory, a production and post house specializing in innovative content creation for television, online and digital media. BRIANA COWLISHAW
