I like my lighting like my coffee… backlit and strong.

Big octa behind = wrap
Black flag = attitude

No flag? Foggy mess.
Flag it? Clean edge.

Backlight first. Shape second.
Made this on a quiet gap between shoots.

Most people think colour gels don’t work.

They do… your lighting is just too even.

I’m using a blue gel and a CTO (orange) gel here.

But here’s the key:
You only see that colour in the shadows.

If you light everything evenly, the colours disappear.

So instead of flattening the light, let one side fall off.
Then push colour into that shadow.

Quick tip:
Turn each light on one at a time.
Make sure there’s actually shadow before adding the gels.

Sunny the golden retriever.

The kind of dog that makes you understand why people say “best mate.”

Photos like this aren’t really for today.
They’re for years from now.

If you’ve been meaning to get a proper portrait of your dog, consider this your sign.

They’re not just pets.
They’re part of your story.

One day these photos will matter more than you realise.

Pearl.

One day, this photo will feel louder than it does right now.

You don’t take portraits for today.
You take them for later.

If you understand that, you’re ready.

Maple.
The curls. The tongue. The soft eyes.
She won’t always be this age.
She won’t always look up at her owner like this.
But this moment? It’s frozen now.
That’s why I photograph dogs.
If your dog is your best mate, don’t wait until “someday.”

The experience starts long before the shoot. Clear booking and payment means fewer emails and calmer clients walking through the door. When people know what they’ve booked, what’s included, and what happens next, uncertainty drops away. A simple, transparent booking process reduces friction, sets expectations early, and allows clients to arrive focused and relaxed. That calm carries straight into the session, making the shoot smoother and the portraits stronger from the first frame.

Keeping the studio layout predictable helps shoots run smoother. When people know where to stand, where to sit, and what to expect next, their shoulders drop and the session feels less intimidating. A consistent studio setup removes unnecessary decisions for both the client and the photographer. In my Wellington portrait studio, a familiar layout creates rhythm and flow, allowing the focus to stay on the person rather than the process. Predictability builds trust, and trust shows up clearly in the final portraits.

Most people walk into a studio feeling a bit nervous. The space should lower that, not add to it. For many clients, having their photo taken already feels unfamiliar and exposed. A cluttered, loud, or unpredictable studio only amplifies that tension. In my Wellington portrait studio, the layout, lighting, and flow are designed to feel calm and reassuring from the moment someone walks in. When the environment does its job, nerves settle faster, trust builds naturally, and people can focus less on being photographed and more on simply showing up as themselves.
