Is the workbench of photographer Rob Wilson.

Rob is based in Wellington and his love for the outdoors translates directly into his passion for landscape and astro-photography. He also lends his creative flair to portraiture, weddings and special events. Rob’s love of the night sky started young with early dreams of being an astronaut. The host of science fiction TV series and movies that he grew up with served to fill his imagination with th

e possibility of endless adventure. While the dreams of being an astronaut were never fulfilled, Rob has endless hours enjoying the boundless vistas of our night sky. Once a camera filled his hands the hours turned to into months of work capturing the night sky to share with others. This has lead to excellence in both night and astro photography. The resulting images have been very well received both nationally and internationally. Rob also enters many local and international competitions with a win in the 2012 Dominion Post Viewer Competition earning him a place in the World Press Photo Exhibition the same year. The winning entry was Pencarrow Lighthouse on a blustery Wellington night and it reflects both Rob's tenacity in spending endless hours in remote places to get ‘the shot’ and his obvious ability with his camera. Photography is a natural extension of Rob's need for adventure. Whether it’s hiking across the hills, off roading Wellington’s rugged south coast or blazing across the country in his land cruiser, the opportunity of a great shot is ever present. It’s a joy for Rob to share the benefits of his adventurous nature in the captured images. The adventurous nature doesn’t end with the land. Rob spends a significant amount of time every year underwater SCUBA diving. Get into a conversation and the stories range from tiger sharks in Mozambique to wreck and reef dives in the warm blue waters of northern New Zealand through to the cool surgy coastal waters of Wellington. They all lead to one clear image, a profound and deep love of the ocean and all that comes with it. It’s only a matter of time before we will be treated to images from what he likes to call ‘inner space’.

This was a very lucky capture - one of the many objects falling from space - this loosely named "shooting star" was likely made up of Iron or Sodium as the colour was orangey yellow...
It was so beautiful to see with the naked eye as it fell to earth in a spitting ball of light flame.. as it lanced through the shot.

A fantastic night at Te Puia Hut thanks to the team at Department of Conservation for such a great hutt and amazing hot pools.
And have a look at the sky there with no light pollution.
The vertical has 5 satellites in the shot as well.
And both have some amazing air glow - (The colour banding in the sky.) The cloud like formations on the right of the edge of the Mily way is the LMC and SMC (Large Magellanic cloud and Small Magellanic cloud) - you are looking at two objects 158,200 light years away...
The Large Magellanic Cloud is a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way. At a distance of around 50 kiloparsecs, the LMC is the second or third closest galaxy to the Milky Way, after the Sagittarius Dwarf Spheroidal and the possible dwarf irregular galaxy known as the Canis Major Overdensity.

Our second assault on the marine debris at Oriental parade - less than last time even though our teams are getting more and more capable by the event.
Still an impressive haul and an incredible community of people banding together for the greater good of our marine environment.
And a beautiful day Wellington turned on for us.
Thank you to all the team involved.
Please feel free to tag yourselves and share the album or photos.
Thanks all - Rob Ghostfishing NZ
