Under the sea🐟️

One of the things that I love the most about my job is a product photographer is taking peoples ideas and figuring out how I am going to bring them to life - especially the more challenging ones😅

I really wasn't sure how this theme was going to come together but in the end it was the mixture of natural elements and some fake coral that brought the magic, I am just in love with all this texture and that flower to the left of the product was just the perfect addition for this theme, they actually look like coral😍

I could never have planned this out fully in pre pre production, it wasn't until I had all the elements in front of me that it all came together, it takes some time to arrange these things😅

So if your thinking about booking in for a shoot and your wondering what is possible, please, hit with your ideas - I am so ready for the challenge!!

Does your brand get full use of our prop collection and what extra charges may occur?

Trust me when I say I have quite the collection of stuff that has been gathering in my garage for 9 years now😅

So when you sign up for your next shoot with Nikki Astwood Creative all this stuff is available to be used in your shoot at no extra charge. Extra charges do apply when I have to purchase fresh flowers, ingredients, paint and other art supplies and anything else random that I don't already have.

For the above image for example I had all these props already and conveniently pretty much everything was already pink💖 There was some spray paint required to finish off a couple of the items - this also includes my huge library of backdrops - vinyl and material, so much to choose from!!

If you have been following my journey for sometime you will know I love pink, it is one of my favourite colours to work with weather that be bright, pastel, dusky or otherwise💖

Not every brand wants pink tho right?! That means I have had to branch out and get comfortable working with all kinds of colours and although pink will forever be my fav I love the challenge of a fun new colour palette to experiment with🌈

From the beginning colour has been a major aspect of my work and style and as time goes on it just becomes even more so, I love to be bold with my use of colour and try out unexpected combos, I also LOVE a monochrome look💜

Simple shot vs Fully Styled scene👆️

Simple in this context just refers to the styling of the scene but these shots can also be just as tricky to pull off. As there are so few elements typically, everything has to be just right👌 For these shots it is very important to have the right kind of props, textures here are great to add some interest, high impact lighting is another way you can bring some life into these shots and an awesome colour palette never goes astray no matter the scene🧡

The larger scene takes time to create as there are so many more elements to place and get right, colour, lighting and textures all apply here too of course💯

Both of these types of scenes will bring something different to your set of brand images and I would usually suggest a nice mixture of both so that you have options for every use, also I think together they tell a great story.

A little behind the scenes of one of my favourite shots that I created for last year💜

I had no idea how I was going to create this under water scene so it was a real go with the flow moment and all the elements came together piece by piece to create this final look👆️

Sometimes there is clear plan to a final image and other times there is a rough idea that needs to be worked out and solutions provided - these are the most fun I find as you get to experience the images coming together layer by layer and it just gets better and better as you go along 🤩🤞

A favourite from my shoot with at the beginning of the year👆️

I thought this would be a relatively easy concept to create and clearly I haven't learnt as things are never as straight forward as they may seem😅

Getting all those ingredients in the glass and staying in place when all they wanted to do was slide all over the show was challenging but hey, it makes it all the more satisfying when I work through those challenges and get the final result I was after 💙

Five things that I am working on in my business and personally at the moment:

⭐️ Being present with my creativity and limiting distractions when I am working on images - SO many distractions, snacks, cat, phone the list goes on😅

⭐️ Putting my best foot forward regardless of the outcome - I mean I would love to get more likes on my Instagram posts but regardless I am here anyway showing up for those who are always here supporting me💖

⭐️ Working on my mindset - a forever thing but generally helps me stay more positive and not get involved with those sneaky voices that pop up with their negative vibes💯

⭐️ Finding other creative outlets that I can do just for fun and not because they are my job. Obvs I love my job but I also like to keep that creative spark alive and experimenting with other creative outlets helps to do that🤩

⭐️ Trying to slowly increase my physical activity - after being in hospital at the end of 2023 it has been a slow start to the year but I am making progress every day and I am super grateful for that💪

What is something that you are working on either in your business or personally at the moment?

On a daily basis when I am just moving through my work and without knowing it making new and small adjustments that make my work better I don't notice how my work has changed, it is not until you look back that this becomes blatantly obvious😅

Then there are the images that I look back on and it takes me right back to that time when I felt in the creative zone and full of excitement for what I had created, this image for Clean Collective is one of those shots.

I hadn't looked at this shot for a long time and it popped up the other day when I was looking through some files and I was like "wow, I still love that shot and I would totally still create that today" 💜💜

Instead of looking back with a critical eye I try to look back now with a grateful eye and really appreciate how far I have come and how many amazing creations I have brought to life over this journey🥰

It is always a privilege to get to work with such amazing clients not just in New Zealand but internationally too. And of course who doesn't love some positive feedback, this shoot with the team from was definitely a favourite and really allowed me to experiment with some styles I had been dying to try💖
